Road Cycling

So..again, why do people run? It's so rubbish compared to cycling.

Legs are quite tired from a combination of two runs, two hilly rides and lots of commuting in four days. Looking forward to some active rest tomorrow.

It's been a while since I've been as tired as I was today. Had a nap in the afternoon for the first time in a good 6 months! Just didn't sleep well last night with load of food still running through me. Going to attempt a metric tomorrow and Friday.

I meant to ask - what was it you did that required 6k kcal? Sounds fairly epic :)

Also, totally want to convert my old Cotic X to a CX bike and take it on some basic/easy MTB trails (to start with - I'm a total novice to such things). Any thoughts on using it in that way? I think it can fit 42c tyres.

My right knee is hurting... It often does after a long ride like mine and FT's ride on Tuesday. It's something like a tendon on the outer side of my knee. I'm not sure whether it's due to saddle height or cleat position. I'll have to have a play with it. It was this sort of pain that originally drive me to get a bike fit, though at that time I was getting this pain after just a few miles on the bike, rather than after 60 or 70. Maybe it's just delicate now and destined to always hurt... I hope I can figure a way to adjust my fit to stop it.

BennyC's advice is sound but also...did you ever sort out your droopy saddle? :p

Cross bikes are fine until it comes to descending on anything but lovely smooth gravel I find. Once you hit that stuff then they lose out as you don't have the control and they're more suspectible to being knocked off line.

You'll be surprised by how much punishment the rest of your body will feel after the first few rides. Friends of mine who move from road to mtb always comment on how much it hurts at first.

Interesting, cheers. I think I need to get on and sort it out. uv's suggestion as an alternative to the 300 mile ride next year is coast2coast CX. Could be fun :)

Legs are feeling better today. It's amazing what difference a rest day can make. Going to get 20 or so in today, then the dreaded "going for a run" in the evening. Tomorrow I'll be hitting some local hills then on Sunday it'll be a flat metric.

How'd you know if you have a saddle sore, rather than just discomfort from being sat on a saddle for a couple hours?

Being a bit sore will generally be gone by the next day. A saddle sore will be more localised and will often persist for days.

It may be more swollen too

For those that use turbo trainers, do you change your back tyre or just use your standard tyres? I bought a trainer that recomended a change of tyre to prevent wear on my road tyres but don't know if it's just a gimmick? I use the trainer as a last resort rather than going out so not sure if I should be changing my back tyre every time?

Definitely don't use your regular tyre if you can avoid it. You don't need a turbo tyre - you can just use any old random one if you make sure you remove all the glass/etc. That said, a turbo tyre will probably engage better with the turbo and 'feel' better.

Gentle ride yesterday meant that I could really concentrate on how knackered my bike is. Needs a thorough service of the drivetrain, gear re-indexing with the now stretched cables, headset cleaning and re-greasing and new brake pads on the front. Also really need to get my spokes re-tensioned. So much stuff, so little time this week :/

When I did the triple ventoux challenge last month i met a guy after my third summit who had just done his second. He had started at 4am - 4hrs before me, but he said he was going to do it, so did. There were plenty of families riding up to do an ascent, plus one bloke who must have been at least 120kg on a knackered hybrid.

But yeah, excuses...

I've thought about other things but I now think this has to be my next challenge.

Typing with one hand so excuse typos/shortness...

Descending Oak Rd in Alderley...recent torrential rain put tons of gravel on the road. Wheels went out from under me at 28mph. Hoping bike is pwn'd enough I can replace the whole thing via insurance...
