Well me and the missus are more or less settled on our road trip from San Fransisco to Las Vegas for our summer holiday. Flights with Continental come in at a reasonable price but I can only find a yawnmobile for the car and really want a convertible or mustang or something....

Anyway, we are in the process of building the itinerary and have thusfar got:

San Fransisco- 3 Days- acclimatise, visit alcatraz and general touristy stuff
Drive to Yosemite-2 Days- Stay in a spa/lodge and do some walking
Drive from Yosemite to *somewhere* 2 Days- not quite sure where is good en route to LA!
Drive from somewhere to LA- 3 Days again do touristy stuff in LA, beach, Hollywood, getty centre etc etc
Drive from LA to Vegas- 4 days lapping it up in Vegas baby! Play some cards, relax by a pool, visit grand canyon and generally enjoy ourselves.

So, has anyone got any suggestions of things to do in between Yosemite and LA. Or even alternative routes to consider? I would hate to travel all that way and miss something that is a must see...

Thanks for any assistance and input! Will send you all a postcard :)

We did something similar a few years back (was waith family though) but we started in Vegas and did a huge loop through LA, San Fransisco and San Deigo.

LA is very disappointing, you imagine the walk of fame to be high end street littered with boutiques but in reality its a dodgy, dirty looking place with crazy people and homeless everywhere. We were only there for less than a day though so hopefully we were just in the wrong area, and that its not all bad.

San Deigo Zoo would be another suggestion, but it would take a day in travelling from what i remember, but....PANDAS! :D

I want to go to SD Zoo, other half hates zoos so will work on that one :)

We're doing this too in the Summer. However I think we're having a week in Vegas first, then fly to San Fran where we'll take a drive down to San Diego, obviously stopping off for a few days at a time at various places on the way (Monterrey, Big Sur, Santa Barbara/Monica, LA, etc.). Then back to Vegas again.

I reckon I'll skip this though and let the family carry on, whilst I stay in Long Beach with the gf. :p

Found a "Convertible Mustang or similar" for 2 weeks hire, SF airport to LV airport, £461.

Watch out for the or similar, the all similar is often something horrible like a sebring and quite likely to be what you land up with.

When we went to Vegas last summer the only company I could guarentee a Mustang with online was Hertz which worked out pretty reasonably priced especially after a nice quidco kick back.

This is exactly what I'm doing this summer.

You need to do a triangle really - because Highway 101 along the coast from SF to LA is apparently unmissable - one of the things you absolutely MUST do. Then you can do LA to Vegas, and then Vegas back to SF via Death Valley and Yosemite.

And if you are going to do the triangle, then fly into and out of LA because you can get direct flights and they are more reasonably priced :)

I would drop a day from LA, take an extra day travelling down Big Sur.

And get a convertible, don't question it, just do it. Even a crappy sebring, is a billion times better than the best SUV for a driving holiday in Californee

Gawd I love Californee :D 6 days to go

Went with parents 2 years ago. Flew to LA, drove up to SF through santa barbara, montery and aload of other places. Very fun!

Then drove all the way back down, stayed in LA for a 4 days then onwards to San Diego for another few days then back to LA for the flight home. Highly recommended :)
