Formula 1 star Robert Kubica has suffered "serious injuries" while taking part in a rally in Italy, an official news agency has reported.

According to reports, the 26-year-old Pole crashed into a wall and was air-lifted to a nearby hospital.

There has been no official confirmation on his injuries but reports suggest he was suffering from "multiple trauma".

The Renault driver has been preparing for the new Formula 1 season which starts in Bahrain on 13 March.

:( Hope he recovers in time for the GP, really enjoyed watching him drive last year.

But WHY! do the team even allow them to do things like this? And why do the drivers do this? Fair enough in the downtime between seasons, but with less than a month to go I don't understand the need to take these risks.

My previous rant may be nullified if he was doing it for a charity etc. :)

you cant wrap them in cotton wool, there thrill junkies, button with his triathlons, webber with his mountain biking, rossi with his moto x etc. :(

I know :( but at some point common sense must override their desire for thrills :D Especially so close to the GP start. But perhaps I'm being a bit too level headed :)
Edit - Although to me I'd have considered driving F1 cars at >200mph to be a fairly thrilling thing to do :D Now he may not be able to do that, you see my point?

Something tells me that despite this, he'll still beat Petrov.

When I hear serious injuries and off season crash, I immediately thought Webber.

There has been no official confirmation of injuries apart from the fact that he crashed and has been taken to hospital. I hate kneejerk reporting.

We'll get official word later today. Until then, it's all just pointless speculation.

 OMG, hope he is OK!!! This is so close to the F1 season. Why do the drivers do this.

Edit: Possibly broken both of his wrists too? He can forget this years F1 championship.

Edit 2:

I really really hope this is just rumours:

12:09 REFERRED TO ACT
Robert Kubica has undergone a CAT scan from the Santa Corona Hospital orthopedic surgeons who are testing the extent of the presence of fractures and internal injuries. Between fractures reported by the pilot in the crash against the wall of the church, even that of a very serious hand according to initial rumors is almost crushed. 14 is expected for the first medical bulletin.

11:57 COULD RISK USE THE RIGHT HAND
Robert Kubica was extracted from his Skoda uonini still conscious of the public service of the 118 who attended the race. The pilot was intubated and stabilized helicopter awaiting the arrival of firefighters at the accident site that carried the doctor. Given the gravity of the situation, it was decided immediate admission to the nearest hospital. For the severity of fractures, Robert threatens the use of his right hand

Some reports (e.g. CNN) are saying he could even lose his hand! Geez. I really hope not, such a talented driver.

We just spoke with Mauro Moreno e Corrado Bonato, the crew tried to save a minute from the hit Kubica (Kubica started with Moreno with the number 4 and 5), although it is of pilots and doctors, the story of what they have seen, unfortunately, is horrifying.

The driver was crushed between the plates (in fact it took almost an hour to remove it) and the guard-rail, Bonato told us, "was passing through the foot."
Although it has been confirmed in a situation that should not pose a threat to life, the conditions of Kubica look really very serious.

The thing is, if the bones are actually crushed (and they are saying is upper leg is crushed in 3 places) they are so difficult to repair. It is so much worse than a fracture. The important thing is that he is stable and not in a life-threatning state. It sounds like his F1 career is over though, certainly as we have known it.
