Thinking about getting myself a hardware drum machine/sequencer. Although I realise that going software based is probably more versatile, I want a setup that I can pack up and cart around easily, plus make it easy to create music live. I also prefer the way hardware instruments 'feel'. I'm a guitarist/drummer/singer getting into making electronica/dnb/weirdass stuff and I prefer to feel like I'm playing an instrument rather than doing my dayjob of programming!
So, with that in mind, does anyone have any experience with the Roland MC-808 groovebox? I had a quick play in Turnkey the other day and it seemed great, but there was a lot to get used to, so I obviously didn't find out all of it's features/quirks. The motorized faders seem like a great idea as that's something that annoys me about my synth when going from preset to preset (Novation X-Station 25).
I guess the nearest competitor pricewise is the MPC1000, but it seems slightly less featured. Are they worth the extra cash or are you paying for the name/image? Bearing in mind, I doubt I'm going to use too many presets.. I want to use it to make my own, original music and use my own samples or drums that I scavenge from places.
Any thoughts?
