I really want to get my hands on a Rolex Daytona, but do not want to wait 5-7 years (the current waiting list).

I am prepared to pay a small premium and have seen the following on ebay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROLEX-DAYTONA...8QQihZ020QQcategoryZ31387QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I am a little dubious about buying a watch of this value from ebay and wondered if any of the watch 'gurus' on here had heard of this seller/got any advice?

Thanks
Chez

*shakes head in wonder* why, why, why would you ever consider spending THAT much on a watch

Why not?

The only reason why is that I like it. Do I need more reason than that?

For that kind of cash id go in person rather than buy something off ebay.

I see your point. Problem is that I don't drive and if it turns out that this seller has a good rep, I may save myself the hassle..

it looks genuine enough from the pictures but theys no way to ensure thats what you will get. It looks like a proper seller with a shop, I would email them via their website http://www.darrenreay.com/index.php?page=contactus for a viewing, as theres no way I (myself) would pay that much without a viewing first.

Its worth driving down there as its quite a lot in my eyes to risk.

Feedback seems to be plenty good enough, however with that sort of money why not give them a ring on their number and see if you can go pick it up?
Go to be worth a journey for peace of mind?

From the ebay listing:

In the unlikely event that you are not 100% delighted with any product that you buy from Darren Reay Watches you may return it within 7 days for a full refund - no arguments!.
In this case you could buy it and take the watch to a jewellers that you know and trust to get it checked out. If you aren't happy then send it back. If you're satisfied then keep it :)

i just don't get how people can justify spending £5600 on a watch, when i'm sure there are equally 'good' watches out their for £30, after all, a watch is to keep time, not really anything else, i think if i were spending that much money i'd want it to feed me breakfast and scratch my arse :o

unless your a millionaire i'm sure there's something you could find better to spend your money on...like a games room, or redecorating your kitchen...or something

but if you are a millionaire...can i have some? :p

(all just my opinion, and i wouldn't recommend buying a watch on ebay, especially not for that price)

The watch doesn't justify the price tag or the 5 year waiting list imo.

I'm sure for that money you could find something better. It's appearance is pretty much bog standard, the only thing that sets it apart is the fact that it is a Rolex.

Why would you spend £15995 on a car when you can buy one to get you to work for £995?

I wouldnt buy a watch like this but if he has the money and isnt financing it, whats the problem?

also, i wouldn't spend £15k, i also happen to think thats a bit silly, however, I would be inclined to think of a car as more of a neccessity than a watch :o

Some poeple are prepared to pay for quality products. I'd take an Omega for a fifth of the price personally, but its his choice.

Not everyone wants to wear cheap £30 crap.

most of it really isn't crap, and it does the job a watch is meant for for ***** sake, £5000, or £1000 really is overkill, i think i'd possibly even re-consider spending £100

@OP as already someone has said...take driving lessons and get a car for that kind of cash (even if it is 'cheap crap' it'll do more than a watch, and you might get a digitall clock on the dash  ...win win imo :o )

Just because it's cheap, doesn't mean it's crap.

damn straight, does exactly as it says on the tin, keeps time, and my last watch, which cost me £25 is still going 3 years on, has never skipped a beat, and came with a lifetime warrenty, can't beat that tbh :o

Generally speaking, it does. I've got a 50 quid Casio, does the job, thats fine. But to some people, 'does the job' is not acceptable - they expect more.

I have a newer version (Z Serial number) of that watch and it's fantastic. I've also heard good things about Darren Ray from other guys i have spoken too so i'm pretty sure you will be fine buying from him.

As to comments about what you should spend on a watch, i get them all the time as well

I'm by no means rich but my current watch collection comes to about £15,000. I've got the Daytona as mentioned above, a Hublot Big Bang in steel and ceramic, A Ball Hydrocarbon Alligator, A Grand Seiko GMT Spring Drive (yes, a SEIKO that costs more than it's Rolex equivelant!!) and a few others. Why do need them? I don't. Does the £5600 Rolex tell the time better than my £100 Casio G shock? No. Why do i need umpteen watches when i only have 2 wrists and only ever wear a watch on 1? I don't. How can i justify spending so much money on watches? It's my damn money and i'll spend it how i like thank you very much !! :p.

You'll never lose money on a Rolex Daytona, i got mine from a local AD and was lucky enough to pay reatil on it (i'm in the shop a LOT!!). Cost me £3670 as i got it just before the latest price hike. That was 18 months ago and i was offered £5500 for it recently. What else could you buy today, use for 18 months, and sell it for over half as much again on top of what you paid for it?? How much have you lost on your PC parts or car in 18 months??? :D
