It's quite amazing really - he's such a natural goalscorer that his time at Real has almost been considered a failure. Yet I read this today: "Ronaldo has scored 69 league goals for Real in 98 appearances."

Quite an amazing record... if you probe further back to when he way probably the best striker in the world when his fitness was up to scratch before his injuries, his record in Serie A, one of the most defensive leagues in the world is equally amazing.

I've always liked the guy to be honest, he's never been much of a moaner or a diver as far as I am aware, but it's testament to his potential ability that some people almost consider his career a failure because of the sensation that he was when he was younger.

He also holds the record for most goals scored in one World Cup, which was 15. I personally admire him.

Heh, not quite. He scored 15 goals over 4 World cups, still more than anyone else has done.

I've no idea how he can be considered a failure. It's odd that the outstanding player of our generation (I'm 27) has such a bad rep. He's scored (roughly) 220 goals in 292 top flight games. People call him a fat write-off but he's only 30 and who wouldn't have him on their team?

I found a wee vid of him at Barca (37 games, 34 goals), when he was only 20...

Yeah its strange really.

He is still as fast as most players in the world. To call him fat is rather harsh. He's not as in shape as he was when he was younger sure, but as fat as people make out? No way.

He just works less now because of the injuries he's had. Such a shame that he suffered those injuries too as that goalscoring record could have been so much better if he hadn't I reckon..

Would have loved to see him in the Premiership :(

He gets a lot of stick and that has got to him no doubt. I've always admired Ronaldo, it only went downhill after leaving for Madrid. I remember when he was at Inter they loved him, this Brazilian who will out pace anyone, give him the ball and he will beat the offside trap and he will be off and you will be another goal down. Whenever he had the ball you knew he would do something with it, everyone looked forward to it.

I'm glad he got the record for world cup goals, its not talked about much but it should. He's still a great asset to have at any club, hopefully his move to Milan is almost done and he can may be show us some of that sparkle again.

Anyone remember Denilson? 98' World cup - the hype was UNBELIEVABLE! 200 hop overs a second wasn't it? Biggest transfer record it was.

incorrect facts.
played 120 games for real up to the end of last season. scoring 81 goals. In 4 years so only 20 goals a season
international around 100 caps - 60+ goals
this is according to football manager 2007 still a good record though.

Since he's put the weight on, people say he's lost it, I beg to differ though. Get the ball to his feet within 25 yards and he'll bang it in. ;)

Ronaldo was never the same player after he did his knee in the first time, then did it in again on his first game back.

He has still been a top quality player since then but just not in the same league as he was before the injury.

The lack of general fitness over the years hasn't helped either, he isn't fat but he is certainly heavy for a pro footballer and has been for a while.

At the time I classed the pre injury Ronaldo as the best player I had ever seen and since has only been matched by Zidane and possibly beaten (just) by Ronaldinho.

He was a huge prospect, such a shame everything went pear shaped. I remember Betis paying around 22 million for him. He hardly played in 98' WC apart from the final in which like his team, was poor.

I liked him personally, not sure what he's up to nowadays.

Best part of Ronaldo's game was his running with the ball,

In recent years you cannot deny he has got a little porky, which takes the edge off his running.

Still a real asset and a great player.

Aye he put weight on and lost pace, he was still the master of the step over and knock it past the goal keeper, was awesome to watch.

Milan close in on Ronaldo signing

AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani expects to finalise the signing of Ronaldo with Real Madrid after the Brazilian has a medical.

Ronaldo, 30, has 18 months left on his contract and an offer has been made by for him by the Italian club.

"Ronaldo will undergo a medical at Milanello on Friday and on Monday I have got an appointment with Real," Galliani told a Spanish website.

"If everything goes to plan, Ronaldo will be a Milan player on Monday."

Galliani added there "is a chance" that Ronaldo could be at AC Milan's San Siro Stadium on Thursday to see them play against Roma.

Ronaldo, the highest goalscorer in World Cup history, cost £20m when he joined Real from Inter Milan in 2002 and could move back to Serie for a fee believed to be £5m.

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has made it clear that Ronaldo is on his way out of the club, having barely played under new coach Fabio Capello.

Milan had pursued an interest in Ronaldo after the World Cup, but decided not to proceed because Real were only interested in a swap deal involving Brazil midfielder Kaka.

"Real Madrid are not ready to allow Ronaldo to leave for free. There has been no agreement," added Galliani.

"I work in relation to the decisions that are made by the coach. The board will look for a suitable solution for the club and the player.

"I have already said that the players are not like merchandise and we cannot move them on like they are.

"What we want is that all parties benefit and nobody is left feeling bad."

Ronaldo has started only three league matches under Italian Capello, who has been focusing on bringing in new blood since taking over in the summer.

The former Cruzeiro, PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona and Inter forward has also been linked with AC Italian rivals Juventus and a move to Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.

Ronaldo has scored 69 league goals for Real in 98 appearances.

Twho things have shocked me in this thread, Ronaldos scoring record for Real i always thought he was there to make the numbers up tbh but bloody hell thats some record, shame the Real fans treated him badly but when you have a scoring records like hes had at previous clubs you can see why they would

Im also older than Tru

In his prime, Ronaldo was absolutley awesome. Raw power and skill mixed with amazing pace. The injuries have taken their toll on him thats for sure. Even though he scored a few in the world cup he didnt look anywhere near as sharp as in other tournaments.

He's the only opposing player I can remember getting a standing ovasion at Old Trafford after he scored a hat trick and got subsituted.
