Rooney has just been stretchered off. OH NOOO

I have no doubts that Owen and Rooney will be named for the World Cup squad unless there is a major setback between now and then. Fingers crossed that they both recover well enough to have an impact in the WC. Expect the papers tomorrow to basically rule out any chance of England getting far in the WC. I can understand some people's views on "It's only one player, we have other players who can fill his boots". But realistically there isn't a player with his capabilities who can play up front for England. Crouch is good but he is weak, severely underweight and just lacks that certain something. I don't think he will cut it against a proper world class defence.

The footballing world has been building hype around Rooney for the WC for the last year or so. I'm sure even some of the England players have been sucked into this hype as well, so when you take that player out of the equation it is very likely to have an effect on the team.

So if England draw or lose a game it will be because "Rooney wasn't playing" or "We didn't have that threat up front without Rooney". And if he is playing and they don't win, I'd expect headlines from the tabloids slating Rooney for missing chances and not playing like he should have been. Is he already the fall guy before the competition even starts? I've said this a few times in the last few months. The tabloids will print any old crap about him to sell more copies.

not too optimistic myself, how long has Owen taken and im pretty sure it was longer than 6 weeks for Beckham in the last world cup (and he still wasn't fully fit)
That was his 5th metatarsal though (which is smaller, weaker and more prone to injury).

Heres to hoping that Rooney's injury resolves by the last 16 (if we can't get through the group stages without him, frankly we wouldn't have stood a chance of winning with or without him)

That's my hope as well. I'd be happy it Rooney was fit for the knockout matches, as that's when we should really need him. Rooney is a very naturally fit player, so as long as the injury doesn't give him trouble I'd play him, even just 60 mins he could do enough to win a game for us.

Why can't injuries like this ever happen to someone like Crouch? Then maybe we'd take a decent big man in form like Beattie is.

A thought..

We use Owen (assuming he is fit), Bent, Defoe and Crouch in the group stages, which should see us qualify and then bring Rooney back in the KO stage which would give the team a huge boost at a stage we have a habit of turning stale at.

I don't want to be too negative but, even if we get to the knockout rounds without him, there is no way he would be able to play and then play 3 days later and then 3 days later and so on. I hope he is fit but i would be amazed if he was. Owen will be fit, even if he has had a set back he has 6 weeks to get over it

I'm absolutely gutted that it's been confirmed as a fracture :( Rooney is an amazing player, and the World Cup is meant to be about the very best players from each country taking to the pitch to take each other on. I was already sorry that Heinze is doubtful for Argentina, but Rooney is the sort of player who gives you the moments you'd still be talking about from World Cup 2006 in ten years time.

I pray by some miracle he'll be fit and able to take part in some shape or form at the World Cup, otherwise he won't get another shot until he's 24 :(

I blame Alex Ferguson. Injuries to:- Heinze, Rooney, Smith, Ruud, Gary Neville, Evra, Ole, Saha, Park, Ronaldo, Brown... The list goes on ;)

its a pretty sorry state of affairs when your main hope of winning the world cup relies on one player, but unfortunatley its true

Yeah it does make me chuckle that England had supposedly a 'great squad' and 'our best chance of winning since 1966', and yet the same people can turn round and say Rooney's injury scuppers our chances completely :)

The way I see it, if any nation can't cope with a single player being injured, they aren't that great a squad to start with.

serves the boob for being a TRUE BLUE, we all saw the t-shirt

pfft, did you say ££££££. ok Mr mancs.

just like Mr Smith.

I woudl'nt mind but they cant do half of donna/pele/de bomber put together.

Well I didn't expect England to get far in WC anyway considering they relied on him so much ( last Euro anyone?). Now that's he's out we will probably get past the group stage into quarter finals and get knocked out by some half decent team. Beckham is gonna say that we had bad luck and we'll do better next time and some player might cry on the pitch. Usual stuff really.

Clearly thought a lot about that post :p

Yes we have good replacements for him, but none of them could change a game like Rooney potentially could. Nor do any of them carry the same passion that Rooney does. When hes on the ball the crowd is on the edge of their seat. The same can't be said for any of our other strikers. If hes out then the midfield has a VERY big responsibility. I may be tempted to play Gerrard behind Owen and bring someone like Carrick into the holding role...

hahahahahahahahahahahaha.

now instead of build up, anticipation etc etc. it'll be six weeks of medical school for everybody.

learning about rooneys foot, the bone, how it happened, exactly how he should walk to improve his chances.

Three weeks in the sun will have an exclusive from some nut job doctor claiming that rubbing wd40 on his foot will increase his chances of being fit.

tbh, tho. it is bad luck but to have world cup hopes based on the performances of a fiery youngster wasn't the best plan really.

besides there are other players. Ya'll be fine. until penalties come round, again!!

Its those stupid lightweight boots they all wear.

They offer no support or impact protection.

News says he is out for 6 weeks.

I say take him, scrap through the group stages 4-5-1 with Bent upfront and Lampard behind him, if Rooney is OK to play after that depending on who we have in the first knockouts, play him then.

Some injury guy has said that he will miss the first 2 games... but from 5weeks it will be training...

i think that would be a silver lining on this very dark cloud.... even if he wont play any group games... he must surely be ready to play from the knockout stages..

FINGERS CROSSED.. there are no setbacks

FINGERS CROSSED also Owen will be alright.

I am going to touch every piece of wood i come across :p...good luck to the medical team.. hope they get it right

lol it has to make me laugh when everyone places the hopes of winning the WC (yeah right that's going to happen  ) on a single member of the team

Even with Rooney, England WON'T win the world cup
