1.it was not a clever tackle to start with.... rooney is pulling the players leg and then appears to follow through at the end of the tackle by stamping on him. imo he has a yellow card at this stage

2. while ronaldo was remonstrating with the ref it was ridiculous of rooney to get involved by pulling ronaldo round and pushing him. imo yellow elevated to red card

3. where was the support from rooneys england teammates immediatley after the tackle?

4. ronaldos wink at the end..... I was giving ronaldo the benefit of the doubt that he swayed the referees desicion up to this point. though admittedly the clip is a little biased in this respect.

The ref gave a straight red for the "push". Up until then he was signaling just a free kick to Portugal.

Ronaldo is a scum bag.

No he isn't, and he did nothing wrong what so ever.

That is such a childish comment when every england player acts in a similar fashion.

Complete and utter rubbish :) grow up

errrr... Yeh whatever mate.

I don't even like watching International football, its quite boring. However i don't like seeing players getting other players sent off. Then winking afterwards like "look what i've done"

So i say again, Ronaldo is a scum bag.

PMSL sorry fella but you really really need to get your facts right tbh. So that little kid Ronaldo didnt do anything wrong did he??....so i take it that its quite ok to try and goad the ref into giving him the red card right???. Fair enough Rooney shouldnt have pushed him but i can see why he did it, Ronaldo had absolutely no right to go up to the ref and try and presuade him into giving Rooney the red card. That sly wink proves that his intent was malicious.

Anyways the Portugese and Ronaldo are nothing more than dirty cheats, at one time i was rooting for them but after that Rooney incident...well it left a bad taste in my mouth. Just for the record, i cant stand Rooney myself but i thought he was treated harsh tbh.

I've heard lots of people excusing his actions, saying that he was off balance. If you watch that clip you can see that his weight is on his right foot and he puts his left foot back and down onto the Portugese player's kajangas. If he was off balance, his left foot would have gone forward to take his weight. Plus, he put his hands on another player, which is a no-no.

He deserved to be sent off.

Look every time someone around rooney is fouled he rubs to the ref or linesman and swears his head off. Even if the foul isn't for him but his team mate.

Same with most the England team for most other tackles they are near by, if they are involved in the challenge or not.

Ronaldo did the same thing...

this happens week in and out in the premiership, basically every match until the fa decided to crack down on it slightly at the end ... i.e. look at chelsea mainly, and every other team also

Ronaldo did the same thing, he played the game... Didn't do anything illegal so stop picking on him

He did appear to stamp the player, however the ref was not going to even book him for the incident.

Rooney got a straight red for the "push".

Wayne Rooney is to be investigated by Fifa for violent conduct following his sending off in England's World Cup quarter-final defeat against Portugal.

And what about Figo or the Argentina game? Terrible.

The naughty boy kicked a water bottle as he walked down the tunnel.

No he didnt but what he did made a mockery of the game and was extremely unsportsmanlike imho. Yes other players do it but does that mean he has to do it himself so that his team gains the upper hand??. Tbh im glad they didnt score the dirty cheats and as much as it pains me to say this, i hope Zidane and co absolutely cream the living **** out of the portugese next week.

The BBC seem to think that it was for the stamp. We'll see if/when it's officially announced. I think the ref didn't show the red card straight away because he was immediately rushed by a bunch of players, and he was waiting for things to settle down a bit. We've seen refs take their time before making a decision quite regularly during this world cup.

Looking at the video it was at best 6 and 2x3 with Rooney and Carvalho, in fact with the way Carvalho AND Petit were wrestling Rooney could well have been a free kick England’s way up until the point he stands on him.

The thing that is most telling IMO is Rooney’s eyes, watch his face and eyes, they are always looking at the ball.

Was it deliberate? Hard to say, it could well have been deliberate, or it could have been him stabilising himself (given his momentum was away from the ball and across Carvalho at the time – he also stands on Carvalho’s leg at the end of the incident), but given that Figo was only allegedly given a yellow for a deliberate head butt in their previous game I can’t see how it’s a straight red.

The push on Ronaldo was completely stupid however.

That doesn’t surprise me at all, England usually gets the book thrown at them by FIFA when others may get away with it.

In Figo’s case it was said that if the Ref gave a card for it in the game it couldn’t be acted upon after the game.

It has happen with drugs (Ferdinand’s very long ban – compared to 2-3 players actually caught with drugs in their system who got much lesser bans) and issues like this many times.

At the end of the day I guess it’s whether you believe not “illegal” equals “right” and if you believe gamesmanship is part of football and sportsmanship in not.

From that point of view Ronaldo did nothing “wrong”…. But it’s a pretty jaded point of view IMO.

From another point of view the headbutt incident on Rooney before hand, the asking for a card and the wink afterwards makes it pretty clear on Ronaldo’s intentions. And lets not forget Ronaldo should have been yellow carded himself on one occasion certainly for blatant diving, I think if he’d done it in the box even that Argentinean ref would have carded him for it.

The BBC showed on MOTD Highlights that the ref indicated with a stamping motion what the card was for. So I guess it was for the stamp rather than the push. I'm undecided as to whether Rooney intened to do it or not, but it doesn't really matter now.

As for Ronaldo, no one here knows what he said to the ref. He could have said "that's a foul" or "that's a red", one of which is a lot worse in terms of sportsmanship than the other. Either way we don't know so I don't see why everyone has to say it's Ronaldo's fault.

How the hell does officially announcing anything make it intentional or not?

Who cares what Fifa say, as long as Sepp Blatter is in charge they wont cut rooney any slack. Not like his mate figo.

i think that what ronaldo did - ie run over to the official and remonstrate was worth a yellow. arent they trying to cut that out?

also, i feel if rooney hadnt pushed him, he wouldnt have got sent off.

and i also thought it was a free kick to england to begin with, as rooney had the ball at all times and got physiclly, hoarded off it by the end.

Shut up, your full of complete crap. Ronaldo, from the start of the match went up to rooney and headbutted him... dont know if you saw that clip.. then it was his protesting and elevation of the situation that got rooney sent off,

yes, ronaldo is a complete ****, simple as that really.
