rooney's red card incident (video clip)

For what its worth I would love Ronaldo to at united next year if only to see him cry at every game.

My take on the incident is it wasnt a stamp and until he pushed Ronaldo he would have probably gotten a yellow card.

What I find unforgivable is the 'butt' before the game and the wink. Any player doing that to a teammate deserves everything they get. Will have no problems seeing him upended from now on.

And I am a lifelong manu fan.

But I guess he has signed his own transfer away from the club. Maybe Rudd will stay now and we get a winger who can deliver.

we all can be great after the game,a ref only has that time to make his mind up,rooney has a rep for being hot-headed
2 wrong dont make a right weather he stamped or not, push was final straw
at end of the day, england didn't as good as they should, get over it and plan for next wc or euro
like other countrys have too
every game in world cup had good and bad discisions
it was very poor performance and setup that lost the wc for england
learn from it

Heh I guess that means, learn to used gamesmanship and bury any vestiges of sportsmanship. :(

Aye a wonderful future for football that would be.

Given the amount of gamesmanship (diving, faking injury, badgering the ref etc.) we've seen in this world cup, Portugal being one of the worse offenders across the games, and given it was supposed to be cracked down upon after the LAST world cup.... perhaps the next world cup drawn games won't be decided upon penalties, but a theatrics competition at the end of extra time. :)

...With clearer regard to the match, I actually think Ronaldo should have been booked prior to Rooney's sending off for diving like... well... a European. I think there were some dubious decisions in the match (as there seem to be in the past two world cups) that went both ways, but I think the referees in general should be made aware to 'crying wolf' by players, regardless of their team/club/etc...

Yeah, the refeering has been anything but consistent in this tournament, look at the Argie vs Germany game, at least 2 argies got booked for diving and play acting.

Whereas Figo and co got away scrap free. Cheated by the Argies without even playing them.

Damn they're good. :p

This thread is a hot one and by the time i get one page read there is a new one added so i'm gonna stop reading and post my views.

The Ronaldo headbutt at the start of the game was not friendly banter in my opinion and i did not think so at the time. The expression on both players faces says it all, neither are smiling, in fact i would go so far as to say that Rooney looks generally stunned which is probably why he hasn't reacted.

The 'Stamping' incident. Personally i don't think it was a deliberate stamping, carvalho was lying in a heap at Rooney's feet and Rooney was trying to find his footing, his concentration was on keeping posession of the ball, as it had been for the previous 10-15 seconds when he was being mauled by 2 portuguese players. The fact that the incident has be replayed to death now both in slo-mo and realtime is as good as subliminal messaging and people are going to see what they want to see out of it. How may people can honestly say that at the time before the Red card and the replays that they actually thought Rooney had stamped on Carvalho?

Ronaldo approached the Referee with the intent of getting Rooney a card of one description or another. The Referee had already given the free kick so it is laughable that Ronaldo ran that distant to tell the Referee it was a foul when had already given it. The push was handbags and far too much has been made of it as far as i'm concerned.

Ronaldo is engineering a move to Real Madrid and i think his perfomance was more down to that fact than any club v country dilema. Unfortuneatly for him it looks as though his candidate isn't going to win the presidential vote for Real and out of 10 players that were on Lippi's list for the other major runner Ronaldo was not one of them.

Ronaldo vs Rooney. This one for me is a no brainer. There is no doubt that Ronaldo can produce moments of brilliance as does Rooney but it is the other end of the spectrum where Rooney shines out. Ronaldo spends too much time dancing round the ball very often going nowhere or with no end product; he is selfish in possession and his pass selection is schoolboy at best, not to mention the fact that when he loses possession he falls to the floor imploring the referee for a free kick while somebody else in the team has to cover his player. Rooney on the other had can track back, tackle, stay on his feet, keep possession, pass the ball etc. As for his temper!! the kid is only 21. Roy Keane, Patrick Viera, Eric Cantona, Mark Hughes etc It not as if he is the only sportsperson to have gotten excitable on the field of play gees even tiger tim has been known to throw the odd strop now and then.

The major thing for me has to be the standard of refereeing in this tournament. It is heralded as the greatest show on earth and Mr Blatter sees himself as god. Every tournament we hear about the great clamp down and yet it very rarely happens. I think i remember 1 booking for imaginery carding to the ref and possibly 3-4 for assimilation and yet i can clearly remember in one of the opening games a player holding a card in the air to the ref for what must have been a good 20-30 secs - nothing was done. After the whole fury of Man Utd surrounding the Referee a few seasons back, this was to be stamped out again this has never happened. The england match being the most recent example with Ronaldo running out of position to confront the ref (and yes i know he is not the only player guilty of this). At the end of the day there are very few referees that can hold the respect of the players in this day and age and it is up to FIFA and other footballing bodies to tackle this. Handing out Fines and suspensions do not work - deducting points is the way to go, certainly in domestic leagues anyway, knockout competitions would be slightly more difficult but you get the picture. In Rugby it is only the captain who is allowed to address the Referee and it is a system that is proven to work well especially when you can be carded or sinbinned for questioning the ref. I also think we need to stamp out feigning of injurys - if a player goes down claiming to need treatment then he should go of the pitch and be force to wait a certain period before rejoining play - kind off like the standing 8 count in boxing - i'm sure this would cut down on the amount of play acting.

Lastly, Sven showed himself to be a spineless sod. Aaron Lennon should have been in the team ahead of Beckham, a fact i think has also lead Beckham to give up the captaincy. Michael Carrick was given MOM for his performance against Ecuador and yet was dropped in favour of Hargreaves. And as for Theo Walcott my gut feeling is there has to be a murky story behind that somewhere - the kid isn't even a regular for the Arsenal reserves and yet he is picked for the national squad ahead of proven players like Bent and Defoe. Playing Rooney in the lone striker role whenever his strength is as a link-up striker as proved to be a complete waste of time. Lampard can demand all the respect he wants but at the end of the day his performances in the world cup were awful and he was another one that should have been dropped. Sven play 4141 to accommodate the big names not because he thought it was tactically the way to go. And how the heck can a professonal footballer not take a penalty? A keeper 99% of the time decides to go either left or right - Julian Dicks use to just rifle the ball straight down the middle and scored everytime.

I posted on page two (page four if your not on 80ppp) that Sven was informed by the ref that Rooney was sent off for the 'stamp'. :)
Despite what the referee has said post match, he sent him off for the push.

Anyone can see that who watches the video a few times.:)

Your saying the referee is a liar?

Why would he send some one off for a push and then claim it was for something else? Some footage shown on WCMOTD shows the ref making a stamping gesture to one of the England players when they ask why just after the card.

Despite missing the blatent handball in the box just moments before Beckham went?

it was a handball but the player couldn't do anything about it (it wasn't intentional), it was ball to hand rather than hand to ball, would have been a very soft penalty.

Here's my take on the issue:

1. Rooney has the ball.
2. Carvalho blocks Rooney (or trys to trip him) with his left leg whilst pulling his shirt with his left hand.
3. While he is being blocked, Rooney keeps his eye on the ball whilst pushing Petit away with his left hand.
4. Rooney stumbles over Carvalhos leg whilst he is being tugged down with him.
5. Carvalho is on the floor but Rooney manages to keep going forward.
6. At this point Rooney changes direction and cleary stamps on Carvalhos lovesack, he also does not attempt to get the ball. Rooney was well aware of where Carvalho was and you can see him make the effort to move his foot over Carvalho as he stamps down.
7. The ref blows the wistle and appears not to do anything as Rooney stands there also doing nothing.
8. Petit goes to the ref and makes slight gestures towards Carvalho, just as Ronaldo storms over with his hands wide apart in disbelief. He does not bother to check his injured team mate but instead gestures to the ref to take in the sight of the agonised Carvalho. He seems clearly motivated to get the ref to punish Rooney for all it is worth.
9. Rooney sees his effort and turns him and pushed him, probably swearing as well.
10. The ref seems to react to this action (as he was unreative to the foul) with a "no no no" shaking of the hand and goes for the red.

To sum up:

1. Carvalho fouled Rooney by blocking him whilst making no effort to go for the ball, he also grabs his shirt and pulls him to the ground
2. Rooney fouled Petit by pushing him away
3. Rooney deliberately stamped Carvalho for blocking him and pulling him down
4. Ronaldo's gestures to the ref show that he is urging the ref to send off Rooney

All in all, what a ******* shambles!

Rooney is an idiot, quite possibly an even bigger idiot than Beckham was when he was sent off for kicking out a few years ago.

Ronaldo did NOT get him sent off, he got himself sent off possibly for stamping though for me the jury is out on that one i really can't decide whether it was deliberate of not but it certainly looks bad. If that wasn't enough he then makes the referee's mind up for him by raising his hands to an opponant.

All of this takes place right in front of the referee - what choice did he leave him? He had to go.

In every game so far players have been trying to get opponants booked or sent off, so picking on Ronaldo is not really on.

At the end of the day Rooney is a professional footballer and should know better. He knew that players like Ronaldo know about his temperment so the last thing he should allow himself to do is take the bait hook, line and sinker. He did exactly what they wanted him to do and effectively allowed himself to be phsyched out by a clever opponant.

If he hadn't have raised his hands and got sent off it could be put down to bad luck, but i'm afraid with the push the referee was spot on with that particular decision.

ok, I'm now going to say this one more time, having watched the video closely - so listen here England...

Rooney is fouled and had he not acted like a **** would have had a free kick.

He decides to be a **** and try and teach Carvalho a lesson for fouling him - cue the sly little stamp (which was blatantly intentional).

Unfortunately the ref was 2m away and saw him do it.

Ronaldo also saw it, came running over to the ref to say "Look wtf Rooney has just stamped on my teammate" Ronaldo doesn't gesture for a card AT ALL. He shugs his shoulders and points at Carvalho on the ground.

Rooney, being a moron decides to push Ronaldo, hands at shoulder height.

After this the ref immediately pulls back and a few seconds later calls Rooney over to send him off.

Bottom line, Ronaldo does not gesture for a card, Ronaldo does not get Rooney sent off regardless of his wink.

Rooney is a complete moron and has screwed your country out of a game they could have won with a half competent manager.

Stop moaning and crying about Ronaldo's part to play, and start watching for a stamp and a push from a young idiot who tried to get away with a sly little stamp but failed miserably.

Here i disagree with you, Ronaldo's gestures like you said are of disbelief - Rooney has just stamped on Carvalho but the ref seems to be doing nothing - surely you'd want some sort of warning/yellow card/ANYTHING for a deliberate stamp?

How can you possible tell that Ronaldo is fishing for a Red Card??? Just because that was the final result?? Rooney made a stupid mistake by pushing Ronaldo, thus it is Rooney's fault.
