Not a medical thread as such as I know what's going on with my tooth, however dentist said I'd a choice between a root canal and extraction and I was leaning towards extraction as that would be the matter done and dusted. Anyone had any bother with root canals after getting them done?

yeah go with the extraction. i should say that i had a root canal done, it has a gold cap on it, and about 6 years ago i broke one of my back molars ( used to grind my teeth while asleep ) and opted for the extraction as i didnt want to go through the process again.

Depends on how infected, usually have greater than 90% sucess rate on RCT over a 5 year period, worse for wisdom teeth, and worse for teeth with longterm chronic infection.

Extract and its gone. RCT and you can always extract later.
If its suitable for RCT then might be worth saving the tooth, might need crowned later for additional strength to stop fractures. Highest failure rate seen in non-crowned molar teeth.

I have one, I was not offered a choice just told I needed a root canal. The tooth has turned black now, its not one of my front teeth but if I do a big smile you can see the dead tooth.

It's a molar at top and back a bit. Had trouble on and off with it since about a year ago after I had a deep filling in it and back then I thought it might need extracted. Got very sensitive then recently gum started swelling and all the things that go with an abscess came along.

Dentist was leaning towards a root canal but said extraction wouldn't be a problem if that was my choice. Price not really a huge factor although still a fair difference, approx £100 vs £18 or so. Was just more curious if folks had any bother afterwards as the dentist said unfortunately there was no complete guarantee of success. Two weeks to mull it over it anyhow.

had a few done and even had an double apicoectomy done back in june.

root canals are fine no pain or hassle with mine. The apicoectomy was a bit sore for a couple of weeks but I wouldn't google that if your sqeamish ;)

I had root canal on my first molar that cracked when I was eating a hard boiled sweet.
After the surgery for around 2-3 days it felt like someone had smacked my jaw with a hammer and only sex would make me unaware of the pain.

the tooth started to crumble apart after a few years and Personally I would just get an extraction if I were ever offered a choice again.

My mum had a bad experience with a root canal surgery as well which made her swap dentists (not that I had the same dentists as her we live in different cities)

I had one of my incisors done, after getting punched in the mouth. I obviously wasn't having that extracted but it's been fine.

Think about it like this, it's £100 for the root canal, you keep your tooth and it might be fine. If it isn't it's £18 to sort it, I'd go root canal.

Depends on your dentist - a good one you will hardly feel it other than a bit of an ache for a day or so, get one that doesn't care and does a poor job and you will feel it :S

Had RCT done on a tooth it was fine for about 2 years then started to crumble, went back and they patched it up (no cap/crown) but she had concerns as she couldn't get to some of the deeper seated decay properly and its now starting to break up again - prolly have to be pulled this time.

Had many done under the NHS, well worth saving the tooth if you can, the procedure is completely painless etc (if you speak up if its hurting).

Not had any problems except one which seems to be sensitive sometimes, might have to get that checked out.

That's the thing and fair point, for £100 it might just be worth trying to see if it works out. In saying that it's more me thinking at the back of mind that there could be trouble with it in the future as she said success wasn't guaranteed.

Appreciate hearing all you folks experiences though, might just get it done. Good to hear yours has been problem free for 22 years doofski, that's what I like to hear. :)

How long it lasts and the quality of the tooth after depends a lot on the state its in before the treatment is done and how quickly after the problem with the tooth is noticed that treatment is done.

Depends. If u have a RC on nhs expect it to need redoing.
Do it privately with an older experianced endontontist* and you will keep that RCed tooth for ever.

Well shame your not in the US, they have just started to use stem cells for root cannals, but i'd go a rc as the dental tech is changing fast. Having a tooht is much better for your other teeth than not having on.

Extraction without a doubt. Had no end of problems with 2 root canals performed by separate dentists (one private) and eventually had both extracted. No problems since.

I had a problem with one of my teeth earlier this year. The dentist (NHS) gave me two options and they were - extraction or root canal. I didn't want neither and asked him to deep fill the tooth and he did..... no problems as of yet (touches wood).
