Router not getting IP from Virgin cable modem

Everything was working fine in my setup on Friday night. On Saturday I upgraded my PC for Eyefinity. This meant rearranging the room for extra desk space, so everything was pulled out including the cable modem and router.

Unfortunately the wife got a little hands on and disconnected the router and CM for me - but I don't suspect she damaged anything.

Once I put everything together again, the router (Belkin F5D7230-4 v2001uk) wouldn't pick up an IP address from the cable modem (Motorola Surfboard 3100). I plugged the CM straight into a PC and it got a valid Virgin IP address.

Reconnected it to the WAN port on the router - no address given. Tried changing cables, and no luck. I can get to the setup pages on the router and have performed a factory reset, but no change. I can get to the management pages of the modem (when it's connected to a PC), but everything looks fine.

Suspecting the router may have been damaged, I've just been out and bought a Netgear WNR2000 router, but am having exactly the same problem. The modem into the PC works fine, but connected to the router gives nothing.

I wouldn't have thought the modem was at fault, as it works fine when connected to a PC - and it's not something I can just get a spare of to test anyway.

Any suggestions on what could possibly be wrong would be appreciated, as it's causing me to go a little nuts!

You need to switch the cable modem off at the wall and leave it off for a good 30 seconds or so before connecting a device with a different MAC address.

Yeah give what Daegan mentioned a go.

Personally I'd disconnect both the modem and router from the power. Leave for a few minutes, connect the router to power and leave it to start up for a few minutes. Then plug the modem in to the power.

I'll give that a go now, but initially everything was plugged together in the same order (with the original router), so the MAC addresses wouldn't have changed.

When you plugged it into the PC and rebooted the modem, it is using the mac address for the onboard/card LAN. So it needs to be rebooted again to accept the routers Mac address which is different.

Thats how I understand it anyways.

OK, we're back online!

Strangely "turning it off, and on again" is one of the first things I tell my users. Talk about do as I say, and not as I do!

Thanks for the suggestion :)
