Whenever I have to lug my work rMBP around I use a Thule Crossover backpack. Nice protected section for the laptop and plenty of space for other stuff. You can tighten the sides too so it doesn't hang too far from your back if you don't have much in it.
I have the STM Velo 2 shoulder bag - lots of protected storage space for laptop and other gadgets but its not too big either. I use it to carry around my laptop when travelling into London - never gets in my way.
Had it for over 6 years now, and still going strong. No rips or tears, and aside from the colors fading slightly in places it's good as new.
Northface Borealis appear to be the newer version with a dedicated space for a laptop. Where as the modem has a full length pocket in the main compartment.
