Documents have appeared that appear to show a PlayStation 3 Super Slim model.

Documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), spotted by Japanese website Pocket News, reveal Sony Computer Entertainment's plan to release a new PS3 model, labelled the 4000 series.

We're currently on the 3000 series. Specifically, the CECH-4001x model is mentioned, and this could relate to a slimmer PS3, which Eurogamer has heard will be announced at German game show Gamescom next month.

The documents mention that "x" will be replaced by an alphabet denoting the different hard disk specification.

Buried within the various test results and charts is an image that shows the 4000 model with a new FCC label position. This image is above and, below alongside images that show the 3000 model and the original PS3 model.

Sony declined to comment when contacted by Eurogamer.

At E3 last month Eurogamer asked Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida whether Sony would launch a new super slim PlayStation 3. "Never say never," he teased.

Sony rebranded the PlayStation 3 in August 2009, when it announced the release of the new PS3 Slim at German trade show Gamescom. It is 32 per cent smaller, 36 per cent lighter and consumes 34 per cent less power that the previous model.

But that was nearly three years ago. With the PlayStation 3 now in its sixth year of life, and reports indicating the PlayStation 4 will launch late next year, there are rumblings that Sony may, yet again, revise the PS3 hardware with an even slimmer and cheaper model to take advantage of late adopters. Gamescom is, after all, right around the corner.

"We haven't announced anything new on PS3 in terms of hardware revisions," Yoshida told us. "We should never say never - hardware guys are always looking at ways to make things cheaper, smaller."

Damn you, I started my thread but had to stop do do work lol.

Looks interesting. I wonder if it'll just be a standard revision or if they are going to change anything else.

This has been obvious since the last System Update changed “Eject disc” to “Remove disc” – it’ll have a flip lid like the slim PS2 and venerable PS1 did.

Not sure about the flip-lid but perhaps the CPU has, once again, moved onto a smaller process. They've already gone from 90nm to 60nm and then 45nm. The next step should be 32nm.

Just over a year ago there were more rumors doing the rounds that Sony and IBM were already developing a 32nm Cell that was twice as fast as the current one...

Perhaps they have produced a lower clocked one (with a few other features knocked off) that performs at the same level as the current 45nm Cell and stuck it in the "SuperSlim". That could be one way of testing it before they ramp the speeds back up and add more features in for the PS4.

I noticed the Remove Disc thing the other day actually. Did wonder why they'd changed it, but then I remembered that it's Sony, and they'll change just about anything for no good reason whatsoever.

If they release a 500gb+ model, I might be interested in this. I've still got a 40gb fat model with a 250gb HDD in. I've recently gone for PS plus and I think 250gb will soon be too small. I haven't got the heart to spend the money to get a bigger HDD for a fat PS3 that's getting a bit on the loud side:p I'd sooner spend £200 on a new console with 500gb+ than £60-80 on just a HDD.

actually, it says price-drop so it might be less than that.

You will be surprised, i have been on PSN+ For about 9 months and i have loads of games installed and downloaded on my 320Gb and after a bit of a clear out recently i have about 100gb left but with the decent free games coming in at 14Gb+ I can see that being swallowed up soon..

Don't forget with PS+ that you don;t have to download the thing right away, just add it to your basket and go through the checkout. You can always go back later and download it so long as you checked out with it.

You can also delete the games you download once finished and re-download at a later date if you want to play them again.
I've got a 320gb and haven't even gone over 200gb - not all the ps plus games are worth downloading :p

I have always liked flip disc lids, they are more aesthetically pleasing and definitely cheaper. I wonder why it's not the go-to method for initial versions of consoles.
The PS1, PS2slim, Dreamcast and such are all beautiful consoles and a lot of that is down to the flip lid. It just works.

Would love this to become cheaper. I'm currently a 360 owner and never looked back

Back in 2007 when PS3 was yet to be released, I was waiting for launch until, I heard that PS3 would be so expensive. As a 14 year old I bit the bullet and bought the 360 at £280.

But, I would love a PS3 to play some of the exclusives that are famously good. How much do people reckon that they would retail?

Would all depend on the size of the hdd. 320gb are like £220 ATM? I'd expect the 160gb to drop to sub £150 but it's hard to tell without knowing exactly what hardware is being released

To me, a flip-top lid is cheap and nasty. Reminds me of those **** £15 hi-fi systems Asda sell. A slot-loading drive is far better.

They reason they're not used in consoles more often is because they require access space above the console itself, which is a nuisance when they're in a TV unit.

True, I find this to be the same. Flip-tops are cheap and nasty.

Is it only me who doesn't really see the point in this?

What I mean by that is; Do you really want the likes of Sony reworking their current system, plowing money into design and building the new "Superslims" or would you rather them work on new technology and a possible PS4, leading to a wave of new consoles which are so desperately needed in the stagnent console market.

this.

why invest more money into ps3 when surely they were making enough money with the slim. just seems pointless especially with the ps4 apparently in development.
