Rumour - "SuperSlim" PS3 hinted at in FCC filing

The idea behind making a new slim version is to reduce costs. The smaller consoles use smaller chips which are cheaper, less plastic, they weigh less, they need smaller PSUs, etc.

So this is very much about them making more money, not spending it for spendings sake.

PS4 development won't have been slowed at all as a result of this.

If you take the costs over the whole development cycle sure. It makes sense. But if rumoured the new playstations are out next year then it does make you think "why?". Mainly because the design, build and test costs would eat into the profits and savings of this new Slim.

Is it only me who doesn't really see the point in this?

What I mean by that is; Do you really want the likes of Sony reworking their current system, plowing money into design and building the new "Superslims" or would you rather them work on new technology and a possible PS4, leading to a wave of new consoles which are so desperately needed in the stagnent console market.

.. Because companies need more time to research into new technologies and bringing another version out enables time to develop a 'new' console.

Making it slimmer won't be a problem for Sony.

Well bear in mind that the PS2 has sold 50 million consoles since the PS3 launched, so about 1/3 of its total sales, and even if they only save £1 on each one compared to the previous model it's still £50m. Thats before you count on the sales of content that new customers will buy.

The PS2 actually had it's last revision in 2007, 7 years after launch and a year after the PS3 launch.

Also as I said, the new revisions generally come with a price drop as well, so more people can buy them.

Depending on how the PS3 sells once the PS4 comes out this might not even be the last revision.

Don't forget that any money spent on the redesign has to be offset against savings on: Smaller chips, less materials, smaller PSU, less weight (shipping) smaller packaging (shipping and storage), etc.

They've done it for years.

It's probably for poorer countries as well. Isn't it Brazil or somewhere, where the PS2 is still the main console because of the cost. Making the PS3 cheaper could make them affordable for places like that.

Indeed, places like India as well. Sony are the only console maker actively trying in such regions.

Which is a good marketing strategy because the poor people in those countries appreciate luxuries far more and are more likely to continue buying from the only producer that meets their needs ie quality for a low price. With all the free games on psn for the ps3 a very cheap ps3 in these regions will be selling well long after the ps4 has started to drop in price over here. So why shouldn't Sony experiment with making existing platforms cheaper, that way they not only extend their market share in wealthy countries but also tap into the markets of poor countries that companies like Microsoft price themselves out of

Though as a tangent, it does make me wonder if Sony will improve their file system so its more optimised for SSDs for the next PS - really doubtful though...

My god Sonys invented time travel and gone back to the 70s to design the new PS3 revision - if that doesnt say earmarked for developing countries nothing else will.

Expecting the bottom to be plastic faux wood...
