Sony did it with the PS2 as well. The little slim one was in development when the PS3 was almost in production.
The idea behind making a new slim version is to reduce costs. The smaller consoles use smaller chips which are cheaper, less plastic, they weigh less, they need smaller PSUs, etc.
So this is very much about them making more money, not spending it for spendings sake.
PS4 development won't have been slowed at all as a result of this.
Is it only me who doesn't really see the point in this?
What I mean by that is; Do you really want the likes of Sony reworking their current system, plowing money into design and building the new "Superslims" or would you rather them work on new technology and a possible PS4, leading to a wave of new consoles which are so desperately needed in the stagnent console market.
If you take the costs over the whole development cycle sure. It makes sense. But if rumoured the new playstations are out next year then it does make you think "why?". Mainly because the design, build and test costs would eat into the profits and savings of this new Slim.
It's probably for poorer countries as well. Isn't it Brazil or somewhere, where the PS2 is still the main console because of the cost. Making the PS3 cheaper could make them affordable for places like that.
Indeed, places like India as well. Sony are the only console maker actively trying in such regions.
That article is just being silly, there is no way the new model will have a SSD
