Running Asus GTX 1050 Ti Strix - What is 4pin connector fan for?

Can somebody tell me what the 4-pin fan connector on the 1050Ti is for?

I initially thought it was to power the onboard fans, but I am starting to think it is to enable you to contract a case mounted fan if required.. is this correct?
