Sochi
The Sochi circuit, located in the Black Sea resort of the same name, is the first purpose-built Formula One facility in Russia and hosted the country's inaugural Grand Prix in October 2014, in the same year that the city also stages the Winter Olympics.

Sochi's Formula One relationship formally began in October 2010, when an agreement to host a Grand Prix was signed between race promoters OJSC Center Omega and the Formula One group of companies, with the support of the Russian government and in the presence of Vladimir Putin.

Construction of the 5.848-kilometre, 55,000-capacity circuit came under the design supervision of renowned architect Hermann Tilke. The track is integrated into the Olympic Park infrastructure, with facilities located in close vicinity to the Olympic Park railway station and to the roads which connect the Olympic venues with Sochi International Airport.

The track width varies from 13 metres at its narrowest point to 15 metres at the start-finish line. The circuit, which runs in a clockwise direction, consists of 12 right- and six left-hand corners, and combines both high-speed and technical sections. On their first visit to the track, Formula One cars reached 332 km/h on the 650-metre straight between the first and second turns, with Lewis Hamilton averaging 213 km/h as he claimed pole for Mercedes.

"It's an amazing feeling to come to this beautiful place and to race on this track," Hamilton said. "It's got really good grip and great corners, with a lot at medium speed; it's good fun."

Tilke added: "It is a fantastic facility with a great atmosphere. I am very optimistic about the future of the unique racing track in Sochi."

Thanks Shimmy,

Got my parents and the in-laws staying with us this weekend for the bank holiday so probably won't get to watch it unless it's raining.

Not overly fussed with this one mind. Hope Merc can sort themselves out — another win for Hamilton will keep the battle with Vettel lively if they can keep trading wins.

I'm not very optimistic for a good race given how difficult following cars seems to be this year

Doesn't seem to be that much issue with following (well maybe Merc are still too reliant on their front wing), at least tyres don't instantly go off when following for a lap like they did before. I'll give you that passing seems harder, especially with DRS not being as effective, however the few passes there have been were generally a lot more skillful imo.

I'd go as far to suggest that even being there's overrated, unless you're on some epic hospitality package. Sure, the views are great from some areas (we did Piscine, and could wander out to the mega yachts at the back of the stand) but the views of the track are pretty restricted, the city itself is tiny and cramped on a race weekend and there's just no racing to see.

As a one-off experience, definitely. But I'm in absolutely no rush to go to another race at Monaco (although I did have a sneaky look at ticket prices once I saw Button was back, so I'm a hypocrite!)

Monaco really isn't for the TV. It's all about being there.

I find it brilliant viewing on TV. The racing isn't great but the special is great. Plus its fun thinking to yourself well I was doing 70 round that part, or that's where I parked for such and such.

Now Russia on the other hand is on a par with Valencia, and Korea.

My view is pretty biased.

I think everyone gets that, but the special experience of 2,000 people at a circuit doesn't justify keeping a historic artificially hyped non-race on the calendar. The race is exciting as posting the winner's trophy to chap who's ahead at the first corner, with a few diamonds glued on to the box used for shipping.
