RWD Saloon/Coupe wanted

Then he has to do 15k a year (think: insurance, tax, MOT and repair is gonna come up every year) just to break even driving a £1500 old RWD coupe when he has a much nicer RWD coupe already which he could drive all the time?

My suggestion was to get an LPG conversion (bout £1100 for a 6 cylinder car) on the 330ci instead of buying another car, then he would have £400 change and no extra bills and it would most likely pay for itself in a year anyway due to the fuel savings.

*EDIT*

Fox beat me to it :P

The thread you linked to Fox was 6 months ago when I was living with my ex partner, circumstances change and while I can afford to run the 330Ci just fine as it is, I would like to be able to put some money aside, as it stands spending 60+ a week on fuel just around town is silly and if i can offset that figure by getting something cheap and cheerful with a small engine (1.6-2.0 petrol or diesel) and possibly half my fuel bill every week then its money saved in the long run.

Obviously selling the 330Ci would make more sense but being winter the resale value of convertibles is rock bottom. I had considered LPG but having seen quite a few nasty accidents because of the LPG tanks exploding I don't think I could trust it.

If you want a cheap and cheerful diesel with a small engine why is thread asking for a rear middle drive coupe?

Illogical thread is devoid of any logic.

You won't save money running two cars. It really is that simple.

Keep using the 330i or better still sell it. I guess if you are no longer sharing with your ex then your costs must have gone up even more given how much more it costs to live alone.

How many miles a week around town are you doing? Paignton is not a very big place!

Costs have gone way down, as im no longer paying for a 2 bed flat with ridiculous electricity bills.

Out goings are half what they used to be (rent + bills are now < 450/month instead of 800+)

I cover torquay, paignton, brixham, totnes and newton abbot and travel between all 5 constantly each day.

Surely your employer pays for your work miles? That's hardly all town mileage anyway is it!

Either accept you bit off more than you could chew with the 330i (we did all tell you it was a stupid idea) and sell it, or keep using it.

They are the only two choices.

You can claim tax relief on the difference between the rate you get and the permitted max rate.

Why did you agree to keep using your car at such a low rate, it is supposed to cover running costs not just fuel.

None of what you post ever seems to make much sense :(

Judging by the experineces of people I know, MX5s are no where nearly as cheap to run as many people try to make out.

I don't know where you heard that from, but it's largely rubbish. One of the many charms of the MX5 is that it is cheap to run in addition to being hugely fun to drive and reliable. You can spend as little or as much on them as you wish.

I've spent a fortune on mine. But most of that was for modifications and upgrades and routine servicing. The only "repairs" I've had to make were replacing a brake caliper (about £60) and replacing the oil pressure sender (about £15).

Other than that, they're very solidly made and very reliable, especially for such an "old" car. A well looked after example should give you no real (certainly expensive) problems to speak of. Only real causes for concern would be rust, leaking roof (couple of hundred for a new roof if you wanted to fix it properly) and sticky calipers (as I mentioned above). Parts are cheap, servicing costs should be minimal, especially if you do the work yourself. Engine is non-interference so if the cam belt snaps, it isn't game over. They don't take much oil, tyres are cheap etc etc..

Compared to the likes of an E36 or whatever else is being discussed in this thread, they really do cost nothing to run :p Mine's even been supercharged for almost a year and you wouldn't really think it's anything other than factory fit, it just "works". Like I said, they can be as complex or as simple as you wish.

I'm in agreement that another car isn't the answer to the problem posed in this thread, however.

You seem to be posting using your bottom again.

Very easy to fix, little goes wrong with them, most parts are very cheap.

No, I am just going by what I've seen mates with MX5 have had to deal with.

Not denying that they are easy to fix and that parts can be cheap, but it is usually suggested that they can be ran on shoe string budgets which isn't strictly ture, is it?

They for example aren't particuarly econimical for a lightweight, 1.6/1.8 car, are they? And that there are a few issues that one needs to be kept in mind? Sticking rear calipers? The short/long crank issues on earlier cars? I'm sure there is more.

People make out that they can be ran on 20p and half a packet of crisps (sort of like your post actually :p) which isn't really the case, right?

It really *is* the case though. I've done 30k+ in mine since I got it, nothing but routine service parts which are very cheap and easily available. Car is 170k now and has never missed a beat. Yes, they are only average on fuel, but everything else about them is very, very cheap.

I take it yours is all pretty much hunky dory now?
