i have had an ipad for about 4 years, it's great and I had no intention of replacing it... use it every day for web browsing and spotify streaming

but yesterday was the first iOS update not available for it... so do i carry on using it for a year or so & then probably bin it, or sell it now and get a new replacement whilst it's still vaguely usable?

maybe this should have gone in apple hardware?

It happens, but it doesn't make your non-updated device any worse. It's just a case of whether there's certain features you want that you don't get and more importantly how well the device runs. Deciding when to sell it on and get something newer is an individual decision really; my first iPad was a 3rd gen, then an Air 2 and I'll probably upgrade to the larger iPad Pro once it's updated with a newer form-factor.

I still use a 1st gen iPad Mini, no iOS 10 here :D

That's no laughing matter. I swapped mine out for a mini 4 recently and the difference is HUGE - especially in terms of screen clarity and just general operating speed. You really ought to do yourself a favour and upgrade. :D
