Safest option for storage of movies ?

I have an Adaptec 3805, with 8 1TB WD RE3 drives attached to it in RAID6. It sits in a headless server running Debian in a spare room.

At the time - 3 years ago I think - storage pooling technology wasn't very widespread and it was the only option I could find that really suited.

However there's more options appearing now, and a great big appetite for it too. Windows 8 server is reported to have storage pooling, with integrity checking too.

The ideal solution is software, rather than hardware. A software parity checking solution allowing for multiple disk failures, and also checking CRCs for bit-rot. Additionally it should be able to borg up whatever drives you throw at it. Microsoft were trying for something with their Windows Home Server, but dropped it. I don't know if a 3rd party has picked it up.

There's also flexRAID, Greyhole, and a few others.

At the moment flexRAID looks like the best option to me, but it's been about a year since I've caught up on it, storage pooling is a new thing and it's not yet mature.

I'm due to dump my current setup and buy 3TB drives, but I'm waiting for the price to drop down.
