Sallery question - IT tech

16k in a desktop support team for my first job in 2003.

Wife a couple of years ago, first IT job, purely 1st line was quite a bit more than that.

Both in South Devon, private sector (was at the same company in this case).

Helpdesk/Desktop guys start on 20k where I am now, moving up to 30k on completion of their development plan which varies from person to person. That's public sector, South Devon.

I understand this may be a bit personal but I was wondering if anyone can give me a ROUGH idea how much an it technician earns in their first year?

At the moment I'm in training with a company and I know that my pay goes up through out the year depending on how much I do. But I've had a tough time finding out from the boss what the pay jumps up to when I finish my training.

Any ideas? or am I just being greedy wanting to know how much I could be paid?

Many thanks

DiCe!

depends on so many things.

Public Or Private Sector ?
What is your Actual Job Title ? What do you do ?
Whereabouts is it based ?

private sector 1st line helpdesk worker up north with little experience required is going to be on about 12/13k.

Example :

But if you're looking to get more into enterprise kit, maintaining a customers SAN, doing project work hands on in a data centre etc..

You're talking 30k +

pff public sector... In 2005 I felt like I'd stuck career building gold when I landed a well paid local government gig - only to find the biggest bunch of dysfunctional, lying inbreds that dared to blag their way into the IT industry.

I fitted in immediately.

Well, of course, we had it tough. We used to 'ave to get up out of shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick road clean wit' tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two wit' bread knife.

LUXURY i tell thee. :D

It was luxury if i ever saw a road. I had to lick a dirt track clean :D

can you define what you mean by a Tech ? is it what most people ( Fox excluded ;) ) would term a hardware engineer ?

if so then base salary amd total salary are very different as on call / shifts / overtime / car allowances all come in

the range I see ( server level ) goes from £20k basic ( £35k all in ) to £40k basic ( £70k ) all in

You're brave. As soon as Foxy gets wind of the job title engineer, he is like a dog with a bone. He also states that if you don't have degree then you WILL never earn more than £15k a year.

I'm not trolling, he is going to get annoyed and make things personal just like he attacked me in a similar thread.

Iv seen people without a degree earn over 15k. I think experience > degrees these days anyway.

Iv seen people with degrees walk in to jobs even with ccna's and perform absolutly dire.

18k for my first IT job 6 years ago but then again I was brought straight into 2nd line support and by pass first line.
Now on 25k working for another company doing 2nd and 3rd line support with a 1k increase each year.

I don't think you need to be particularly luck to get on a grad scheme.

I know loads of people who have graduated and not been able to get on Grad schemes, especially nowadays with all this recession hoo-har about.

I know others who have been to uni, done pretty well, and had to go and do apprenticeships fgs.

It depends entirely on where you are half the time

I honestly don't know how I survived when I first started on 13.5

I'm on less than that now and i've been in the industry for over 6 years :(

I said nothing of the sort. Your deliberate attempts to draw me into threads for a fight are tiresome. This wasn't even a thread I was reading.

I have never said nobody without a degree will earn over 15k. What a ridiculous thing to say.

I also never posted in your meet thread until you had a pop at me in that, either.

This is all after that stupid thread where everyone (yes not just me) pulled you up on that contracting thing. Just let it go for goodness sake.
