Need some advice on TVs that i know little about.

I'm not that clued up on the latest technologies and was about to buy the Pioneer PDP-427XD-TS10 for £1599 with 5 year warranty. My cousin just warned me off that particular one and suggested a Samsung 40" LCD-TV LE40F71B for approx same price as it is 1080p HD ready.

Which one to go for and why or should i consider anything else?
(Budget £1600 max)

Need more info first. What will it be used for? What viewing distance?

In terms of warning you off the 427XD, that's a pretty dumb opinion as it's just about the best 42" Plasma out there. Resolution isn't everything, and unless you're planning on sitting less than 6 feet away, then for a 40" set you'll see no difference over 720p..

Personally, unless you were using the TV with a PC a fair amount I'd go for the plasma. Better SD handling, more natural colour, deeper blacks, faster response times. But as I said, that's my opinion. If you really want some bang for your buck, then i'd consider the Panasonic 50" PX60. 50" awesome plasma for £1500  If you have a viewing distance greater than 8 feet then the benefit over a 40" LCD / Plasma will be huge.

Thanks for the reply Riader.
Viewing distance will be betweek 7 and 10ft depending on where we sit. 7ft viewing at an angle and 10ft viewing straight on.
I do plan on building a media centre to play divx and also plan on getting an xbox 360 but the use of these will be minor compared to watching plain tv.

With 1080p broadcasts a long way off, would there be much benefit with the LCD as to watching tv? Plan to keep the set for about 10 years.
Will consider the 50" panny too but it may overpower the small living room.
