Hi.
How do i get DTS working on the HD-850?
I have it set to the right audio 'channel' on the DVDs themselves, its connected to my Amp with an optical cable, and to my telly with a HDMI one (which for some reason keeps coming out with stereo sound from the DVD, through the telly, even though the opticals in use?).

Anyway, for the life of me, i cannot get DTS working.
Ideas?

sorry to hijack thread - but I have the HD850 connected by HDMI to JVC 37" LCD - and when I play DVD's I often get what looks like loss of synch between the DVD and TV and you get a few seconds of random colours and splotches all over the screen - and then it carries on as if nothing happened.

It usually happens at the start of a disk - e.g. around the menu/press "play" - or in the middle of a disk (layer change?) - wondering if this is the DVD or the TV. The TV shows its resolution setting again once all is back to normal - which indicates to me that the TV lost (or lost its place in) the DVD signal and when it re-synchs, says what res its at - e.g. 720p or 1080i

Not seen it mentioned anywhere else (AVforums) - but not bothered to get in the middle of any samsung/jvc "its their fault" finger pointing arguments yet. 99% of the playback is fine - its just at the start and very occasionally for 2-4s otherwise.

To be honest, ive only watched 2 DVDs on it. So i cant really comment, but upto now, i havnt seen anything like you've described.
If i do, or hear of anyone that has, i'll post back. :)

I havent seen any such problems with mine - and I have watched a fair few dvd's

It could be badly made discs also - if the layer change isnt linked properly maybe thats why the tv loses sync? What discs have you had problems with I will see if I have the same issue?

Almost all DVD's do it at the beginning - so its not restricted to a few odd cases - a few do it later on/elsewhere (which I presume but may not be - layer change).

I'm going to try a different hdmi cable at the weekend and see if that improves things.

Are you upscaling your dvd images (to 720p or 1080i)? Most upscaling dvd players have problems of some sort. The problem you describe is common when you set the dvd player to upscale to a high definition resolution. The problem happens because the image is being altered (upscaled) and processed which takes time. The audio however, is not being processed. Hence, what you may find is that the audio is a few milliseconds ahead of the image because the image is still being processed first before being displayed.

Can you actually tell the difference in image quality when you switch from a standard definition dvd output to high definition (upscaled) output? On a 37" screen i cant imagine there is much difference...is there?

Slightly off topic.
In regards to the above issue, would scaling to 720p rarther than 1080i alliviate the possible problem (in my case)?

Whats better to scale too anyway? On a Sammy26" (1366x768).
I have it currently set to 1080i.

Try seeing for yourself. In general, when you make your dvd player scale the image, you are using the scalar of the dvd player. However, in some instances, the scalars of the tv is actually of a higher quality. Hence, its better sometimes to set the dvd player to play the dvd without any scaling. Keep in mind though, with smaller screens (eg. 26"), upscaling (to higher resolutions) might not even make any noticeable difference.

The best way to check is to try it yourself and to see if you can tell any difference. Im predicting there wont be any difference in image quality on your screen, between 576p (SD), 720p (upscaled, HD)) and 1080i (upscaled, HD).

With regards to using 720p instead of 1080i to solve the audio sync issue, there is only one way to find out.

Again.... .sorry for a hijack! :p

What are everyones thoughts on this DVD player, is it worth looking at ? Seen it for £79.99 which seems reasonable, just picked up a Hyundai A321 and am playing DVDs through a 360, will I see much difference in quality or am I best saving my cash for a genuine HD DVD player ?

I can see a vast difference between a standard dvd player and this one on my hidef display - but I havent seen what a x360 is capable of so I couldnt tell you.

The hi-def dvd player for the x360 is likely to be around $199 on release ( whenever that is ) and therefore probably around £199!!! I believe this is so far the cheapest option on HD - DVD units ( not including any pc based ones of course)

So if you think about it the HD 850 is a bargain in comparison - but see if you can get a side by side demo first to make your own mind up

McBain what size is the screen that you intend to use this dvd player on? Also does your screen have a hdmi input?

Like i stated above, upscaled high definition will only truely be noticable on larger screens. And even then, if the scalar of your tv is as good as or better than that of the dvd player then your picture quality will not improve. Some people though (even using smallish screens such as 37") swear that it improves their image quality.

If you have a budget of £199 then the best dvd player on the market that you can buy is the Oppo Digital - OPDV971H.

For a cheaper price people also recommend the Panasonic s52 dvd player. I think this one can be had for less than £120. The samsung doesnt really get a mention these days now that the Oppo 971H is out.

If you really want to go the samsung route though, here is a good thread. I think you can get the Samsung HD860 (newer model) for less than £80 - which i think is a good price. The Oppo, though better, is over a £100 more expensive.
