After all the issues I had with my Sammy 2TB, I'm almost certain I had a dud. It's not matching any of the characteristics mentioned by the majority of people online.
In my case the regular reformat with 4K sectors had progressed 5% after 6 hours, but the fast reformat took around 3 minutes. I've always been advised against the later so I wasn't ready to trust my data with it.
I've now returned the Sammy and decided to go back to a WD Caviar Green.
