Samsung Galaxy Note: 5.3", 1200x800 SuperAMOLED, S-PEN stylus, 2500mAh attery... *phew*

The problem is that all of these points are software and
ICS based, and I worry that the internals of the nexus aren't up to scratch for a phone thats going to need to last for the duration of 2012, in a time when more powerful phones are going to recieve the update to ICS anyway.

The internals are hardly that different. If you think the Nexus won't last a year, then I'm pretty sure the Note won't either.

Saying that, I agree though. HTC have already announced their 1.5ghz QUAD CORE phone (HTC Edge) which will be released Q1 2012. Phones don't last 6 months these days. Exciting huh :)

the new nexus should be fine for the next 18 months hardware wise. Quad core will make negligible different on phones.

Next steps are little.big SOC designs for better battery life and improved top end processing power + beefier gpu for keen mobile gamers.

Hello Prawn67, that's quite a first post! Good show.

With regard to the internals, the only thing that really matters is if you can tell the difference when doing different tasks, and I don't think you will be able to.

They're talking about outputting 1080p content to a TV/Monitor? Decoding HD video is one of the most compute heavy tasks a phone or home computer will probably do these days.

Yes exactly, and the Nexus can't. Not a good thing in my book... it's a visible limitation on a new superphone.

I disagree with your first point... the Note has a 1.4ghz Exynos in it... it plays 1080p mkv's without a sweat... what much more is there for a phone to do other than that when it comes to processing power? :)

I'm pretty sure HP 1080p playback is done by an extra decoder that accelerates the H.264 decoding. Not much to do with the cpu - its all pretty much offloaded.

^ Yep, OMAP4 supports high profile 1080p30 too. It should be good for quite a few 1080p mkvs but if HD playback is a priority then Exynos/Samsung are still king.
(I don't think it can play high profile bluray 40 Mbit/s with full Dolby/DTS yet?)

Tegra 2/the S3 snapdragon and A5 only support baseline btw, OMAP 4 is actually quite decent for HD stuff (CABAC entropy coding etc)

Then again... you could always wait for Tegra 3? Apparently that'll support H.264 at 40Mbps sustained (60Mbps peak) at a resolution of 2560 x 1440 :D

Got my note today, the device is simply stunning in every way (I'm upgrading from galaxy S) absolutely zero regrets, the size is big but fine with me.

So I have wanted both these devices and I have figured out a way to do it.

I pre-ordered a Nexus from gummobile (who are very good) - I am going to cancel that order and swap it to a Note so I can get the Note delivered to me Thursday - assuming they respond promptly but I have seen that to be the case so no reason it would change. I intend on getting the Note from them as they have it in stock with next day delivery.

My next option was to wait until my O2 contract is due an upgrade on 17th November when the Nexus is out or to sell my Evo 3D and Galaxy Tab 10.1 I/O Limited Edition to fund the Nexus and have a bit left over hopefully - so I decided to do just that - I have put those up on one day auctions starting tomorrow afternoon.

If all goes according to plan on Thursday I will have the Note and I will have re ordered my Nexus with the funds from the stuff I sold.

I am then still due an upgrade in a week and a half so I may get another Nexus or Note and sell it (or keep it just so I can android beam back to myself) - we will see when it comes time to upgrade where I stand. Clearly if for any reason the Nexus is delayed SIM free I'd upgrade and keep the money.

And that solves my dilemma that no one cares about here! (and before anyone asks why don't I just order a Note with the money from selling my other devices - well the answer is that doing it that way would stop me having a Note until Friday and I want it Thursday - it is down to simple impatience!).

The real question is why on earth would you sell loads of stuff in less than ideal one day auctions when you could carry on using your perfectly adequate phone for 8 days and then get the phone you want included in your contract renewal. You might call it impatience I'd call it bonkers and terrible financial planning!

Are you looking for validation or something? Do what you want, as long as you can afford it.

You don't strike me as someone that can afford to be impatient - no offence.

I'd appreciate any feedback, here's my review -

I'm reading it now, is grammatical criticism allowed? :p

Read it now, good review Andy.

I think it would win me over as well when up against the S II. I'd be able to put up with the size and it would be great for in-car use, but I just think the Nexus is going to be the sweet spot as I don't care about specs provided there isn't a noticeable difference in day to day use. I hope there won't be.

I like the inclusion of OCUK on the web site previews, nice! :p

One thing though, are you able to take a decent picture of the entire screen zoomed out on the mobiles forum for example? That is where text becomes an issue for me and you seem to have a decent camera to hand. In portrait preferably!

Tbh, I've not been well for a few days and I'm going to blame that! :p There were a few sentences I was looking at and just couldn't reconstruct them, so I just went with them!

I've done that in my video version at around 2:50, hows that?

I'm not bringing up this point as other members have replied with more knowledge on the subject than I have.

What I do want to say is, without a concrete review on the Nexus, neither of us can say whether or not it will play 1080p videos without any issues.

If there are reviews, please can you point me in their direction as I'm yet to read one :)
