Samsung SpinPoint SATA1 Jumpers?

Bingo!

I can see the point in shipping them set to SATA150 and allowing you to up the interface speed (as Hitachi used to do) but setting them as SATA300 out of the box is just plain dumb.

So what do you have to do? Its going to be going into my old nForce2 based iDEQ as a server project, So i could adjust it on my PC for sata1 before sticking it in there. I normally just wouldnt bother and buy a WD, but the Samsungs are £10 (20%) cheaper and when you add in free postage (sorry OcUK, another lost sale for you) it makes a lot of difference.

If you've got a SATA300 capable PC then I'd stick it in there and set the speed. Probably take you longer to wire up the F1 than it will to run the tool unfortunately.

Not the Samsungs but I have used the Hitachi method in the past and looking at the Samsung instructions they're pretty similar. As you say it's a case of shutting down, plugging in the drive, booting off a CD or floppy with the tool on it, run the tool, shutdown and remove the drive.
