Sandbridge/P67 - early 2011

SB i5 v2 looks faster than 1366 and I can't see 1366 dropping below the $200 mark that the SB is looking like. The new version of i7 is looking like a $500+ chip...

Im wondering if it might be worth upgrading my qx9650 (3.7ghz) to something in the £200-£250 price range when the sandy bridge does come to market in 2011?

Purely for gaming performance.

The one thing I'v learnt so far, is there isnt any point shelling out for techonology at silly prices (becuase in 2 years something for 1/3rd of the price will make it look very dated)

However thats a very hypocritical statement, becuase I just paid £300 for a 5870(2g) and Im a bit cross with my self for falling in to the same trap I swore I would avoid, this time around.

A) Probably should have got a cheaper 5850 or 470
B) Should have defo waited for the 6000 series

However I am satisfied with my 5870.... although I have not played any DX11 games yet.... except for BFBC2 if that even counts...

Technically a:

Qx9650 @ 3.7
5870 2gb
4 gig 800 mhz ram

Should be good for the next 2-3 years really right?

Wrong street dude, ^ oh yeah right, I forget overclocked i7 cihps are soo slow....

1366 and skip this generation of sandy's if you know whats good for you, and your bank account.

1366 still supported supposedly for another 2-3 years. nice life, look at the 775 that went well.

I dont know if i want to go with what will soon be older tech stuff the one thing i like about sandy is lower TDP where as i7 950 is 130TDP so lower power costs.

Agreed if the cost is close makes more sense to jump on the new tech if you're in the market. I would go for Bulldozer but it's coming out too late in the year for me unfortunately. However looking at those Anandtech benchmarks it will be a massive upgrade from what I've got especially with a 68xx card thrown in:cool:

As always I am looking forward to the next gen of cpus.

However, my 4ghz i5 rig will be a monster when I buy a 6xxx ATI/AMD card.

I will only buy a new cpu when there is a benefit to me - Just 'being faster' than my current rig doesn't warrant £100s spent on a new rig imo.

That said, I hope the new chips are fast:).

I wouldn't be upgrading your rig either, as you say it has to make sense on a financial level too.

Ivy Bridge Looks impressive and perhaps the tok will be a good 2-3 years afterwards.

This is an interesting time since intel have clearly stated early 2011 release, AMD I believe saying summer/fall 2011 ?

AMD should indeed push forward for a early if not spring 2011 release, will be interesting too see which one is better.

I agree HighlandR, I would go for Bulldozer if they release it before I "need" to build a new machine. Not sure they'll manage that by Q2 2011 though. If it's faster than SandyBridge we certainly will be in for a bonanza next year:cool:

Just stick with 1366, with the price cuts of the 950 they should be picked up if you are thinking of i7. Skip sandy bridge and see what the next gen has in store.

Yea i was looking at an i7 950 was going to do it this year, but I'm worried I'm spending £230 on the CPU and SB hits at the same price and will be far better.

Although not sure i want to wait another 5 months though for SB
