Sandy bridge or stick with 1366

Yeah another one who will skip this generation for definite. Looks like the i7/i5 second hand prices will drop a little more and then stabilize. Not worth the outlay unless of course you can get a good price for it. Very happy with my current rig but "upgraditis" sure is infective!

Skipping this as well. My 920s are doing my PCs wonders. I will most likely look into the 2011 when they get released. Will probably keep 1 920 and change the other to a 2011 for my extensive video editing that I do.

So yeah SB is pointless for someone like me.

I'm upgrading in the sense that if i want to upgrade in a few years it'll cost me £300+ but if i just upgrade on a rolling basis as new stuff comes out and before my current stuff depreciates in cost too much it'll cost me less

Sure it costs more in the long run as it means upgrading more frequently but for the sake of curing my upgrade itch and wanting the latest junk purely because it's there it's a good principal :D

hehe your the same as me, gotta itch that upgraditus :)

I bought my 920 for £230 25 months ago. It has to rank as one of my best upgrades along with the 8800 GTX.. Not many products remain competitive for so long. Take the 480 GTX for example. That only lasted 9 months before it was replaced.

As far as I can see the current batch of Sandy Bridge CPUs only offer small real world performance gains over my 920 @ 4GHz. Spending £450 for a new CPU + mobo to see only 10-15% gain just isn't worth it... I'll be waiting to see what's available at the end of this year...

Is Q6600 D0 still available new anywhere... I cant anyone who stocks it...

That will be the G0 stepping you are looking for.

Unless I'm mistaken they stopped making them years ago - so finding stock is going to be tough and it will be overpriced.

You would be much better off buying one second-hand for £70-80.

Slightly off topic here but what about AMD quadcore owners? I'm contemplating an upgrade sooner rather than later (upgraditis an' all that) so I'm weighing up all the alternatives, plus I'd like a different setup to play with rather than another AMD based rig. Anyone here reckon an SB based system would a worthwhile upgrade?
