Sanity or Stupidity? - 260k e39!

Do you mind explaining to me how you consider this a "no brainer", because to me it sounds an utterly pointless wise of time, money and effort.

You've already got a mid 90s era, automatic, 2.8L BMW so you're going to trade it in a for another mid 90s era, automatic, 2.8L BMW with higher mileage?

Unless of course you mean "no brainer" in the "Nobody with a brain would think that this is a good idea" sort of way :p.

The E39 is a considerably better car than the E36 - which is being a bit harsh on the E36 as it's a previous generation car really. The E36 saloon ended production in early 1998, only 18 months after the E39 was released. They are quite different.

The E36 Saloon was a 1990-1998 car. The E39 Saloon was 1996-2003. You can see how they barely overlap and are as expected, quite different. The E34 was the 5 Series of the E36 generation.

It's a bit like saying that an E60 5 Series is 'the same' as an E46 3 Series simply because production overlapped for a short period of time..

if you like the car, get on it.

i seem to recall your dad has lavished great deals of cash on keeping it ace?

It spent most of its early life as his company car, he retired & kept it.

He was still taking it to BMW for major services when it was 11 years old....

;)

I will probably get it next weekend as I am away in Scotland all this week.

Hope you're not stuck out in the middle of no where in the snow like many of the lorries I passed on my way back from Dunblane earlier today?

On Topic - I wouldn't let the mileage put me off especially if you know the history of the vehicle and given the price you're paying it shouldn't be too bad a motor :)

I'm a bit late getting to this, sine I've hardly posted on OcUK the last month or so, but, I would say for 500 pounds, a 1 owner ...E39 with a known history is a good buy ...assuming it's all ticking along as it should. Even if it does go wrong, it's 500 quid and still one of the best cars ever made.

I picked it up yesterday evening,

Initial impressions are it feels that it can't have done 200k+, it just does not match the condition & drive of the car at all.

It needs a good clean (inside) but its too bloody cold!

The only bad bit seems to be the bootlid, which had had touching up over the years and is in need of attention.

Not bad for £762 imo... :)

The climate buttons are a pain as if I recall, you can't buy them individually but have to buy a complete set which comes on a mock panel. Loads of people used to trade buttons on bmw forums when they'd bought a set and only needed a few of them. Worth doing to tidy it up though.

Boot lids all seem to go a bit like that (to varying degrees) - you can adjust the rubber stops which stops the boot panel edge hitting the panel below when it's shut, but I guess most people never think to adjust it until it's already started to impact and rust!

Fantastic bargain motoring!
