Hey guys, just installed my Sapphire 5850 that i bought from OCUK last week and the fan is rattling, quite annoying really.

Is there anything that can be done about this?

Cheers for any info.

Have a look and see if your card is bent slightly to the side, when I recently put my old 4850 in the 2nd machine the fan was rattling. It turned out the power cable was bending the card slightly causing the fan to play up.

Seems to be a common occurance on 58xx cards, seen quite a few complaints over at hardocp with 5970 fans rattling,

Apart from making sure there's no card distortion as mentioned then it could be RMA time as any kind of fan issue isn't likely to get any better.

If your card isn't bent (even slightly can rattle the fan), I would say the fan is already on its way out. Pretty dissapointing really considering the price of the cards, you would think they would put a really nice ball bearing fan on them, instead of a cack sleeve bearing one. I have an ancient ball bearing case fan that's 20 years old, all rusty from being out in the yard in the rain for 2 years, that is still quiet as a mouse and as smooth as new. I wouldn't imagine anything is half that quality nowadays inside a PC.

I moved the 6 pin connectors around a little bit and it does appear as though the rattle has gone! It was a little bit stiff and could have been bending the card a bit.

Thanks a lot for the help guys

No worries matey, I wouldn't have thought it could make that much difference to the fan, my card barely appeared bent but it was making a hell of a noise.
