Sapphire 5870 fan failure

Well, think I know what was making my games run choppy - fan appears to have failed on my sapphire 5870. :(

Played Dragon age and everything was ok initially, then started getting choppy - surely this is an easy game for a 5870?

Quit, checked in ati control panel and fan was supposedly at 50% and temps were at high 80's - yet card was silent. Oh oh....

switched off - removed card and it was roasting!! Could hardly hold it.

Fan doesn't appear to be jammed or anything - it moves freely, just doesn't seem to be working anymore.

Looks like I'll need to RMA it. Problem is how long will it take to get a replacement? Considering how scarce they are at the moment perhaps an aftermarket fan/cooler is in order instead, as the card seems to be working fine otherwise...

Anybody else had a fan failure on these cards?

Not what you want to hear but if you fit an aftermarket you void the warranty. Let's just think for a moment that it could be the onboard fan power socket that is faulty... bye bye replacement.

does it spin up vigorously when you push the on button on your pc?

if so it could be settings in catalyst / afterburner etc.. or drivers messed up

try uninstalling the drivers / programs.. driver sweeper and and installing again

you might have set up a 0% fan profile or something

if its the fan for sure i would rma it, no point risking voiding warranty

No fan at all. I did a complete power down/switch off at mains. Power back on and no surge of fan on startup. :(

Not messed with the profiles or anything in the drivers. Was working fine up until I noticed it tonight. Tried manually setting fan speed after enabling overdrive option, and nothing then either.

Looks like its an rma then. I'll try in in another machine just be sure first, but can't see it being a machine specific issue.

just quickly make a check to see if the fan cable (4-pin I think), is firmly attached. I've seen one case where it was not attached correctly.

Otherwise RMA.

RMA.

However, if you want to keep using your card until sending it off then look out for a gpu fan to molex adapter. The only downside of this will be no speed control other than setting the adapter run at either 7v or 5v.

The supplier should have RMA stock available (they keep some units back)

Well I bought it from ocuk - who are out of stock of everything most of the time. I'll be pleasantly surprised if they do have any kept aside for RMA's.

Well, looking through the vents the fan connector looks properly mounted to the board. Also the 5870 is completely enclosed in plastic so its won't be possible to get at the fan connector without dismantling it - which would invalidate the warranty. :(

cable tie another fan over the other fan for time being ( 120mm 2400rpm should do the trick ) and make sure you have plenty of airflow going into the front of the card for the time being. This should tide you over till you can rma, had to do this with an old gtx285 that my mate had

Hmm... not sure I have suitable room, cables ties or confidence doing this. :D

Besides, I have just put my old card back in for now, which should keep my going until I get my 5870 back. :p

Well - good news is that I sent the card back on RMA, and I'm getting a replacement.

Bad news is that they haven't any "put aside" for rma's so I have to wait until there's available stock back in before I can get my replacement sent out. :( So back to the waiting game again. <sigh>

That's weird I was playing Dragon Age to and my screen started getting a bit stuttery after leaving it on for a good few hours temps were in 70+ with all case fans on low tho.

Isn't that game so addictive tho.

+1 for sure...it rapes gfx cards and case fans though lol
