Sapphire 5970 Rattling Fan Problems

Well, I bought the Sapphire 5970 and for that kind of price I wasn't expecting the fan to rattle and sound like its totally knackered.

If i tilt the card onto the side, the annoying rattling sound dissapears. Anyone else having similar problems and how do I fix it?

Very dissapointed at the moment.

Cheers

how to fix it would be to return it to wherever you purchaed it from.

A card that costs that much should obviously be working flawlessly but there is the odd one which isn't as good as the rest.

don't attempt to fix yourself incase it voids your warrenty

Sometimes the fan screws are no put on tight at the factory as ive read this on another forum.

I think everyone has the same problem.

Both my 5970s make a little noise at idle so I just put my case horizontal and they are silent.

The screws are perfectly tight on both of mine. I think its just the weight of the fan blades on the bearings, motor or shaft when the card is in "normal" orientation thats causing the noise because when the motherboard is horizontal that downwards pressure is gone as is the noise.

Could try an RMA but I don't think it will make a difference and with stock so low right now do you want to be weeks without the card.

You might want to look at watercooling. I know I am.

I think the fans may be the weak point on the latest ati cards, as the fan failed on my 5870. It was moving freely etc - just not spinning at all when in use.

Sent back for RMA, and is being replaced - but I guess I have to wait for stock to come in now. :(

The stock cooling is actually very good.

I had both of mine over 900 core and 1250 memory (using ati overvolt) and the temps stay good without the fans on full.

The weak point of the cards is the drivers. Just so many issues right now its stupid. Over 1k worth of cards and beta drivers to make it work.

Holding off on W/C until drivers are sorted as I don't want to waste my time on it.

ATI/AMD thinks if you can afford a 5970, you can afford to watercool it as well, otherwise they'd have come up with a better cooling solution I guess.
That's ridiculous. Whilst it's true that people do watercool highend cards selling something that isn't fit for purpose is not acceptable.
