Sapphire 6870 Jerky and Artifacting?

Thanks for the reply. I did however have the problems before I used Driver Sweeper. I only used it as an attempted solution to the problem. I haven't RMA'd the card yet and I'm still not sure whether I should or not. The problems are far too hard to diagnose and I know that they'll just send it back with no fault found. I'll try installing 7 again on my 2nd partition along with the problem games to see if it fixes the issues.

In regard to the triple buffering. I did try GTA4 without Vsync but the tearing was so awful I turned it straight back off again. What annoys me the most about GTA4 wasn't the unstable framerates as GTA4 is never completely smooth, but the terrible aliasing :( I can't work out why the ATI card looked worse on exactly the same settings. I'll try it again without Vsync again tonight.

This is my first ATI card and I'm starting to regret it now :p Not the best introduction to the ATI world.

I wasn`t suggesting running gta 4 with vsync off on a permanant basis i just wanted you to try it to see if your frame rates would hold at anything other than 60,30,20 etc.If you get say 39,40,41,42 etc fps ,that would suggest tripplebuffering is in fact on.If you still get frame rates lurching between 60,30,20,10 then you don`t have it on.

On the subject of anti aliasing i must admit im stumped as i was under the impression nivida and ati cards had no AA on gta 4 at all (except via a mod).I find it strange that you say the aliasing is worse given that both cards would have had no AA.I can only suggest that in CCC you must have a setting thats using a lower quality output.Either that or gta 4 has altered a setting inbetween changeing the cards. This isnt as daft as it sounds cos i`ve had gta change resolution`s on me before now ,not to mention switch off the odd thing or too on it`s own.

It`s one of the strangest games iv`e ever seen for odd behaviour sometimes i see big frames drops ill task out go back in it`s fine, settings changeing themselves like i said before, even periods where it refuses to even load!!!....and then a week later when you try same drivers etc...it loads :).These last few weeks has been the best i`ve seen it running with the 10.10 drivers and with morph AA a lot of the aliasing is diminshed. That reminds me check if the game has activated the in game "blur",that might be why it look so horrible perhaps?

Cheers, I will try monitoring the frames on GTA4 with Vsync off when I'm back to my main OS :)

Found a SATA drive in one of my spare computers this evening and installed a fresh copy of 7 Home Premium 64 bit and put a standalone 6870 driver from the AMD website onto it. No other software, no graphics card history, identical problem in Dead Rising 2.

Attn Pieman and all other 6870 owners!

If you have Dead Rising 2, is it not 100% smooth and do you get small white flashing artifacts around the text boxes. However apart from GTA4, I've not noticed graphical errors in any other games however so I'm not sure if it's drivers or just the game not liking 6870s. I was however disappointed with how Splinter Cell Conviction ran. I bought this card expecting a silky smooth experience in games I could run relatively well on my 8800GTX.

The problem is, I can't really return it if I'm having the artifacts with just 1 (or 2) games. That could just be put down to the game itself :( Is there anything I should try (free), like a Crysis demo or something?

What should I do though? I bought the card from an orange coloured competitor and haven't had a great deal of experience with their RMA service so atm I have no idea what to do tbh.

Funny I had a similar experince with a 5870.
I bought it off MM as new and unused, don't doubt this in any way.

I was waiting on my new rig which was ordered but not delivered so I wacked it in my old rig, was getting artifacts in 2D mode, ie loading screens etc. No issues in 3D that I could detect. It would only happen whilst card was cold, ie after PC was switched on, after 5 minutes you couldnt recreate. I wondered if it was my old pc not being up to scratch etc.

Built new PC, with all new components apart from optical drive ect, exact same stuff.
Never could identify anything to cause the issue, did a return with the guy on the MM who installed it and it was fine :(

Have no idea why that would be, 2 completely diff rigs same issues yet he didn't get it at all. Maybe it didn't like the weather down south ;)

Yeah it's a strange one. My artifacts have only been in 1 game (or I've only noticed them in one game) so at present, I can't really return it as I'm 99% sure it will come back with no fault found. I guess the unstable frame rates can be put down to triplebuffering in 'some' cases. What irks me the most is the fact that my frames on Dead Rising 2 pretty much never drop below 60, yet the game doesn't have a smooth appearance. I'll try to make a video tonight (if I can find my camera's battery) of Dead Rising 2 and GTA4.

If you get round to filming the games do a quick film of your ccc 3d settings and also your in game settings just incase you may have missed something or we can spot something that might be a probable cause.

Couldn't find my camera last night, let alone my battery! I did however play a good few hours of Splinter Cell Conviction which appears to be fine. I also played the original Crysis Pre Release demo from 2007 which was OK. I couldn't comfortably run everything on 'Very High' though, which I was slightly disappointed about. I was getting around 25FPS with everything on Very High, is this about right? I can discount GTA4 because it's so badly optimised, so my only problem is with Dead Rising 2. Could any 6*** series Dead Rising 2 players step up?

been having almost EXACTLY the same probs as you mate on my new build, 60fps shown in fraps, terrible jerky games, so i hope i'm bumping this thread as it seems to have died. :D

Id love to send mine back, as well as the mobo, and get an i5 with a gtx 470. Im not sure my 850w psu could take 2 470's later on though, they are so stupidly power hungry thats why I never got one before, now, like you, i regret it.

My (similar) Specs
AMD B55 x4 @3.7ghz + thermaltake spin q
asus m4a89gtd pro usb3
8gb patriot 1600 @ 8 8 8 24, 1.8v
asus 6870, factory overclocked
850w XFX black edition PSU (seasonic m-12d?)
sammy f3 1tb

Games ive been testing with...
Dirt2
Dead Rising 2
Crysis
Dragon Age

None work very well, expect dirt 2 where the races are fine, but the service station bit outside gets VERY jerky when moving areas.

Dead rising 2 is also jerky for me mate. e.g when coming out of the safe house office and going down the corridor (this is where i have been testing).

I also have tried every driver 100 times, each with its own wonderfull flaw.
10.10
10.10e
10.12 (newest ones?)

with crysis mate if you have sync on it auto goes to 24-25fps for some reason. Annoying as hell. I couldnt live with the tearing on my 42" HDTV so had to edit the hortcut so the game would run in dx10. Which means no very high settings. Still ran quite poorly, with jerky panning around.

are you using an HDTV like me?
