Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 GTO 256MB - Oblivion?

Hi.

I'm currently upgrading my system and I was wondering whether this card will run Oblivion with these specs:

ASRock 939Dual-SATA2
AMD 64 3000+ Venice
1GB RAM


Also, is it worth paying the extra £10 or so to get the PowerColour version?

res doesn't make a fat lot of difference to Oblivion. Agreed though that you'll have to sacrifice quite a bit to get it playable.

it wouldn't make much difference which brand you go for. You'd need a top end card to have a hope of playing it in decent detail. Overclocking shouldn't be much of a problem but it ain't gonna help you that much.

What be the most effective thing I should upgrade other than the gfx card?

the main thing really is the graphics card. The X800 isn't a bad card, but obviously there are better options out there if you want to run the latest games in detail. 2GB of RAM will help slightly but not as much as getting say a x1800 or a 7900GT.

It will match the RAM and CPU fine. It will play the game on medium settings at 1024x768 or 1280x1024 without too much trouble. A little tweaking with the settings will get a more than playable frame rate without making it look too crappy.

Anandtech has a GPU rundown for Oblivion, it's all here

with a x800gto, you'll have to run without HDR. And according to Anandtech, you'll need to be running at 1024x728 and "medium" type settings. If you want to look at eye candy in Oblivion, there is no alternative but to spend as much as you can on a GPU.

They (Anandtech) also did a CPU scaling tests in a different article, and seemed to conclude that only the high end GPU's let CPU bottlenecking show.

I'm afraid you'll have to either save up, or wait a year or two until the current top of the range GPU's are cheap...
