sapphire display port adapter

Why is it USB powered? There are (much cheaper) DP to DVI adapters out there that don't use USB power, why would a video signal need power anyway?

But WHY does eyefinity need active display port adapters? What can it possibly be sending down the cable that needs power?

Given that it can run the other two (DVI + DVI or DVI + HDMI) without power?

EDIT: Ah, it's not an adapter, its a converter, and as such needs power to convert the signal. Dodgy naming of components FTL.

Lots of discussion around this forum and at WSGF about this adapter and similar ones - an important read if ur considering Eyefinity (and dont have at least one DP monitor).
