Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X woes..

do you really think the load is right at 95-100%? or do you mean when its @ 60% and working well?

I have tried using 12.8 and the likley beta 12.9 ones Ltmatt posted, no change.

Well really you'd want the load to be at 100% when gaming (since it means the graphics card is operating at full potential without being held back by the CPU) but you said that when it works correctly, you get 60% usage which is probably what you might expect with an i3 550, since that CPU will be limiting the graphics card somewhat. So although 100% GPU usage is what you ideally want from a graphics card, 60% is probably the right usage with your setup.

As your both saying, the i3 550 is the limiting factor here, have you changed anything or monitored that during the cold or warm boots? I know you have changed the gfx card, but whats to say the i3 is not performing wrongly somehow maybe? Sisoft Sandra or CPUz or any app like that that monitors clock, multiplier etc mghht be worth comparing betweren a cold good, and warm bad boot?

Just dsr it. I've had nothing but problems with mine. Using boost at default speeds and no o/c applied the card artefacts during gaming. Adjusting Board Power Li to +20 did help for a few days but then the artefacting came back in games.

These 7950's on 7970 board are a bit unpredictable if you ask me. Just give me a card with a single bios and good cooling capibilities with no silly boost feature and that will do me.

Let me show you an example of what happened.....1 min

GPU is a HD7950, not overclocked, Windows 7 O/S and I'm using the official AMD 12.8 drivers.

Even though at stock the card needs more juice than those pre-determined in it's bios. Just by putting Board Power Li at +20 sorted out the in game spikes:

Im at a complete loss with it. My 5850 runs flawlessly in that box with everything else the same, so I keep coming back to power - the 7950 uses quite a bit more I believe?

i have a watt meter on my computer.

at max load my 680gtx i7 ivybridge 4.8ghz outputs 110 watts idle.

at max load it outputs 440watts. this is every core with the gpu at max load.

i think with a 600w rated psu you are safe.

Yeah, I was going to say that a 7950 wouldn't draw much more power than a 5850 considering all the efficiency advances they've made. 600W is more than enough for a single 7950, unless you have 30 HDDs or something.

yeah i think im barking up the wrong tree there..

Just rang OCUK support - who thinks it might be an issue with not enough bandwidth on the pci express lane after sleep etc and that is why it need cold booting?!

recommended I try a bios update..

Anyone care to comment?!? really dont know what to think about this
