SAPPHIRE RX 480 NITRO NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER AT OVERCLOCKERS UK (WORLD FIRST) !!!

A Haswell, Skylake or Kabylake will give you massively higher minimum FPS than a 2500k at stock.

But oc'ing the 2500k is free, and the difference oc vs oc is much less than stock vs stock. At least from what I've heard/read.

The general consensus here is that it's just not worth upgrading a 2500k/2600k, not yet at least.

I was tempted to do the same. Is there a solid date for Devils arriving yet?

Not yet unfortunately.

Indeed, especially considering that the good ones could hit 5Ghz on air. There's no point having a K series CPU if you're not going to overclock it!

Ive noticed that since Ive installed my 480, the motherboard splash screen is all messed up, entire blue screen with like pink and green artifacting in places. System still boots without an issue and things are running smoothly, so I've no clue what thats about!

Indeed even with my old I7 920 @ 4ghz my mate with a 5930 was seeing very similar fps to me in the Division. He has a 290x and i have a 290oc. We both had the same settings and measured fps at different points in the game. It's not to scientific as during fights we were not looking at the counter but my fps was still more than good enough. I have seen the odd review where skylake was giving decent gains over every other cpu but it was most likely due to the game not being very well threaded. In games with decent threading any I7 performs pretty good.

Outside of bench marking there really is not much need for the latest Cpu's if you just want to game with a single card.

Older MSI motherboards

Worth noting I had to upgrade the BIOS on my motherboard ( MSI P67A GD65 ) to make the 4GB version work. Without it the PC wouldn't even get to the POST - after switching it on the fans whirred, the screen stayed blank and it didn't even beep. I had to flash the BIOS to version 4.8, though I read on one forum that pre Rev 3 versions of the board get bricked by this update.

I also managed to nudge a hard drive cable a little stopping it from being recognised when installing the graphics cars which added a couple of hours to the fault finding process, on top of having to reapply my overclock after the BIOS flash. Its been a bit painful so far!

Only managed to use it a little since finally getting my system up and running, but has been pretty good so far compared to my two 6950s in Total War: Warhammer

Card received but having a right 'mare trying to set it up.

Get no video output from it when installed, and fans spinning constantly. No POST or anything. Switch video to on-board and still nothing. Take card out - on board works fine.

Drivers have been installed (could only do this without the card installed).

Guess I could try updating my motherboard (Gigabyte Z77-D3H) BIOS to see if this helps.

What a to do...

OK so a BIOS update sorted the boot issue (pretty painless exercise). Now get video fine. Making sure all drivers are up to date however the fans are still spinning constantly...

I just had to RMA my OC+ 8GB too, I feel your pain. I've chosen a refund though and put in an order for a Powercolor Devil, if OC+ comes in stock first, I'll just switch that one!

Just got told that more OC+'s arrived today.. they've got some pre-orders to clear but hopefully they'll dispatch mine today.

Mine is being deliverd tom. And I am using a 2500k on an old motherboard. I have read in a few places that if you are having problems on boot etc. Go to bios settings and look for something that says pci settings. Change it from legacy to the other option. But will just have to wait and see if it boots ok first. But may be worth a try if you cant boot.

Got my card last night its great a lot better than my old gtx 970

Your results are what I have noticed too when simulating stock/out the box and max oc 970 g1. Basically last year I wanted a 970 itx for the htpc but I wasn't paying 250-270, when I already had a 970 g1 which cost me 140. I bought the 165 quid ref 470 from here last week, out the box the 470 performs poor, but once you undervolt and tweak the power limit the 470 compares very well to my 970 g1 at stock boost. The 480 has an extra 8-12% and slightly more headroom for clocking, but the 470 only cost me 165 not 220-250. The 470/480 is good but it's 2 years late and I wished Amd hadn't relied on a die shrink to engineer this and had executed like NVidia did with Maxwell.

My g1 is game stable at 1600mhz and at 1600 8200 gets a gscore of 14400 in firestrike.

Not tweaked mine yet ! I expect more performance after tweaking with trixx 3.0. AMD card improve more overtime compared to NV.

Try removing drivers completely with DDU in safe mode then install the latest crimson driver. To monitor what your card is doing install MSI afterburner and enable the onscreen display for various stuff like fps, temperature, voltage, etc.

The ASIC won't make any difference at stock. The card would auto adjust to the voltage it needs. The drivers could be messed up or traces of old drivers are still there.

Some more info on ASIC quality:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4rzo88/the_stilt_explains_asic_quality_on_amd_cards/

According to the STILT (Finnish overclocker) lower ASIC is preferable for air coolers.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4tbkv0/does_asic_quality_matters_for_the_480_overclock/

Thanks for the info on ASIC quality :)
(Still quite confused :o)

I had already used the amd cleanup utility to get rid of all the old drivers (Never heard of DDU)
and i installed the latest drivers.

I'll download MSI afterburner and give it a try to see if I that gives me any info on whats happening ;)

Don't worry about ASIC quality, until GPU-Z nobody even knew what it was.

What was wrong with your card?

Loose bearing in one of the fans which caused a prety bad rattle noise when under load.

I thought i could just get a new fan shipped out to me.. but OCUK wanted the whole card back.

DPD picked it up yesterday.. arrived back at OCUK just after 11am this morning and they had a replacement card dispatched by 14:50. Legends.

Huge shout out to Bailey at OCUK. :)

Glad to hear it got sorted out fast

I got 3 questions..

1. When is the next batch of Sapphire Nitro+ OC 480's coming?

2. Will one of these run Arma 3 maxed out Ultra with 2xMSAA alongside my 6700K etc in my sig?

3. Or should i just wait for Vega as the rumours are saying maybe October?

Thanks :p
