SAT NAV DISC's Expensive!!!

didnt you get a great deal on the car cos the dealer thought it was like 46k or something and was actually 8k, just buy the disc with the money you saved

Just a general question but how often do most people use their sat nav? Is every journey to a new destination that you don't know how to get to? (or is it just a case of everyone liking a gadget showing a screen with arrows and road and stuff?)

I'd say that 99% of my journeys are to the same places and don't require my sat nav to tell me how to get there.

Only use mine for new destinations or far away ones I'm not familiar with. So certainly not every day, perhaps not even every week.

I do use the screen it displays the nav on every day though, for most cars it makes the interior look that bit nicer and up to date.

It is also a much tidier experience to use, no mounting and the voice directions are built into the stereo so will fade the music for you automatically.

The thing about nav equipped cars is that it's always more than navigation. You get a screen which provides all kinds of info be it iPod tracks/navigation, on board computer information and even things like visual climate control settings on my BMW 530i. This is why it makes me laugh when people say "lol just get a Tom Tom", it's a lot more than that.

In the E60 (which isn't mine but meh) it's useful even if you know the route...

If you're not using the guidance it'll show up funky icons on roads with traffic problems, but if you're using it for guidance it'll do the whole "There are traffic problems on your route. Recalculating. Leave at the next available exit" thing. Dead useful even if you know how to get to where you're going.

Also, call me childish, but I like the fact that it gives you an ETA. Always like to see how much I can beat it by :D.

The BMW Sat Nag discs are £200+VAT

I wouldn't buy them on *well known auction site* as you are just buying copied/downloaded media.
I wouldn't either :).

I'd say either buy if from the dealer, but lube up first, or (if you can sleep with yourself at night etc etc) have a look on the "The world's most resilient bittorrent site"...

I just use my phone now... It's handy as I don't have to sit in a freezing cold car telling it where I want to go... I can just set the destination in the house and then get in the car and go!

I use my phone as a sat nav but generally only when there's somewhere I don't know the route to, if I have an idea then I'll tend to do without it as it tends to choose main routes when I might find it quicker to go via other routes.

I think that's really besides the point.

If the dealer knew very little about the car and wasn't making any claims about it then I'd be inclined to think this is just one of those things you have to take on the chin, you win on the car purchase price, you lose a little by having to purchase a new disk. It's not ideal of course and it's probably worth seeing if the garage are willing to pay for the disk (or contribute towards it) but not the end of the World.
