Sata III SSD and Sata II mobo...worth it?

Hi all,

Considering a Vertex 3 SSD but my P5Q mobo only supports Sata II. Is it worth doing this? Or should I buy one of these with it?

Will I notice a big difference between 6gbps and 3gbps?

I asked this question not too long ago, and the general opinion was that it was a worthwhile upgrade anyway - nicer access times and generally faster throughput regardless!

I have an old vertex 2 in my laptop and can't say I'm impressed by it but still!

You won't notice a big difference especially if it's for your OS. For small reads/writes, which is typically what your OS consists of, an SSD won't saturate SATA2, let alone SATA3.

The only benefit you'd get from SATA3 is if you were planning to do a lot of large sequential reads/writes.

If it were me I'd put more money towards a bigger SSD than spend extra on a SATA3 card.

It will revert/slow to 3Gbps speeds through the SATA II MB connection.

It will still be far more snappier than your current mechanical boot drive.

Bonus is that you'll have a 6Gbps device when/if you upgrade

I'm using a 3Gbps SSD on this rig and it's quicker loading stuff than the VRaptor in my other rig

just my observation and not based on any benchmarking stuff

i have sata 2 and an M4.

the speed difference is pretty wide.

definately worth it.
