Just got an Asus A8N-SLI Premium. Before I've always just connected my hard disk by IDE. Is there much advantage to using SATA if your not going to set up RAID ?

If I do connect my HD to the SATA connection, is it just a question of connecting the SATA ribbon to the mobo and installing the SATA drivers ?

If your talking about connecting an ide hard drive up with sata that wont work as the connectors are completely different. You will have to buy a new sata hard drive. If your in the market for a new drive though, i would advise getting a sata drive as they are usually faster and have a smaller more convenient cable.

No need to install drivers if using the premium / XP with SP2 unless you will be going the Raid route.

I've got a Maxtor Diamond Plus 9 ATA 133 8mb , so I just connect it straight to the Asus A8N- SLI mobo using the SATA cable and thats it ? I don't have to run the SATA installation software on the Asus CD. Sorry for being thick on this one !

You dont have a SATA drive... You need to just use the IDE cable. SATA and IDE are 2 completely different interfaces. If you buy a new drive at some point, it means you can buy a SATA drive and use your SATA ports on the motherboard:)
