Hi there,

I'm thinking about picking up a Saxo VTR for my first car and have a few questions for those in the know :)

What kind of running costs are associated with these? How are they on fuel? Also, how is the gearbox - I've driven a 1.1 and it seems a little notchy and never wants to go into reverse.

Cheers,

Cheers,

They are notchy too ;)

Fuel costs, you should get around 35mpg mixed. Fun, affordable car :)

Tyres are cheap enough to go for a decent brand, fuel wise, I used to see about 300-350 miles per tank, which as stated is around 35MPG. Nothing noticably expensive to replace either.

If you get rattles/resonation around 3000RPM its likely that there is a loose heatsheild around the exhaust.

Still miss mine to this day. :(

Average 40mpg, very cheap to run and is so far realiable 27k later. Gearbox is notchy on mine when cold, fine when it has warmed up.

whats the insurance like for you?, thought they had the 'boy racer' image so insurance would be really high?

I've ran a few quotes through confused, for my dad as the policy holder and me as the main driver they seem to be around £1800 for comprehensive and £1200 3PFT. Not bad considering one of my mates is paying £2600 a year on a Polo 1.2 Twist!

Servicing and the likes shouldn't be a problem as I could get it up on the ramps at work... providing my saturday job lasts :D

What kind of budget are you looking at for the car? You looking to get a phase1 or a phase2?

(hint: get a phase2 ;))

I hear ya ;) The phase 2 front end and interior does seem a lot nicer.

Was hoping I'd get a decent example for around the £2k mark. I had my eye on this but it seems someone got there before me.

Lovely, lowered a little too far IMO (starts to ruin the handling), but at least its in the best colour ;)

Running Costs :- £1900 TPFT Quinn Direct + PP = £157 a month
42Mpg = 350-360 miles to a tank

Gearbox on mine is a swine when cold.

It's an alright car but various things are really starting to pee me off with it. The dangerous pedals, the build quality, the lack of room, the lack of head room.

I wouldn't have another one again, yes they are great fun and apart from insurance cheap to run.

I was blown away by it's performance on the test drive and it was instant love but thinking back to how much I have paid out in insurance alone makes me feel sick.

It hasn't let me down though so I can't complain really ;)

Two bits of advice from me:

1. Get the lowest mileage VTR you can afford. The 106/VTR/VTS group of cars don't bear up very well to high mileage.

2. Look for one on standard suspension that's never been lowered - all sorts of things (dampers/bushes/balljoints/droplinks/gearbox) get undue stress through them when the car is lowered and then driven hard down bumpy English roads, and everything starts to break. As I found out to the detriment of my wallet.

Sorry, but that is twaddle. The pedal box is only "dangerous" if you are an oaf with your feet. I wear size 12 shoes (mainly VANS - so wide), and never once had an issue with the pedals. It takes a little while to get used to the fact that they are offset to the centre of the wheel, but that is about it.

The build quality is that of any similar aged french hatchback tbh, and you don't buy a VTR/S for its comfort and toys, you buy it as a B-road point-to-point fun drive, if this isn't your "style" then the VTR/S isn't the right car for you.

Agreed, the pedal box most definitely isn't dangerous. I wear size 10-11 skate trainers for casual, and drive to work in hoofing size 10 DMs, and never once had an issue. In fact, i could heel and toe quite precisely in the aforementioned boots given the close spacing of the pedals.

When getting in my new car to drive it away when picking it up though, I stalled it - as I went to move off, I lifted the clutch, and put my foot squarely on the brake - which is exactly where the acclerator was in the 106!

I'm a size 11, wear vans and i've nearly hit somebody twice because I blip the throttle with the brake.

I'm selling mine in April.

Insurance is not good at 17........but then again it's only £300 more than a Fiesta 1.25

Or was for me anyway.

You can't drive properly or have some problem co-ordinating your feet then.

No, I can drive properly it's just when you have to do an emergency stop you hit the gas too.......great design eh?

No wonder they are expensive to insure.
