Ended up watching this. Not super creepy, but really enjoyed it. Will be watching Sinister 2 at some point. Cheers ;0

It freaked me out so much i couldnt watch the sequel and just wikipediaed it.

The jump scares (his face moving in the still picture on the laptop....him appearing behind the guy when he is at the laptop and then when the protagonist is in the attic on the ladder and he looks down at him....jeez...***** bricks.

i dont know why i thought this but at the end...for some reason i thought he (the demon character) turned to the camera and looked at the audience and said something like you are next....ofc he never says anything like this...a creepy film indeed

I don't remember any sexual violence in Martyrs (french original) and consider it one of the best horror films i've ever watched, it is completely and totally horrific.

A Serbian Film is just shock horror porn which goes so far that it ends up being almost comedic.

I find those sorts of films a bit depraved and not very fun at all. That genre seems to unduly lean on sexual violence quite heavily and I imagine weird people masterbate to them, which kind of puts me off even more :/
Totally agree, those are not what i would class horror films, they are twisted and sadistic

It Follows.

If I remember correctly relies more on sound so you need a decent sound system.

Great film. Relies on you keeping an eye on what's going on in the background too.

It Follows
Babadook
The VVitch (not really horror, it's an New England Puritan art-horror film)
Shutter (Thai version, NOT THE US)
Pulse (Kairo)
The Grudge (Japanese version, NOT THE US)
Dark Water (Japanese version, NOT THE US)
[REC]
The Woman in Black (1989 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFWgz4nRe0Q)
The Innocents (old but classic)
The Thing
The Shining
The Conjuring (was good, the second was trash. Still some jumps though.)

I'll think of some more, but most English (US) horrors do rely mainly on jump scares and you'll only find 1 decent film for every 50 bad, cheesy or plain **** film.

Films designed to make people jump are so predictable and boring. Try watching a film that makes you question WHY you watching/watched it to begin with. Try watching a film that makes you so uncomfortable you consider turning it off. This will start your journey into to true horror films.

Or... just watch a film for the purpose enjoying it. Nothing wrong with a challenging film but you seem to be suggesting the more outrageous / shocking / depraved it is, the better horror film it is (which I'd disagree with). You don't have to come away wretching for it to be a horror. I also think those sorts of films are more purile than what you might consider to be 'tamer' flicks.

I saw cannibal holocaust once and couldn't exactly recommend it. Very disturbing and really not particularly fun to watch at all (unless you like watching helpless live animals being killed).

I disagree, They are not what i or the majority of people would class as horror, Most people watch films to be entertained, scared, laugh etc.. those kind of films are a step too far for most people, you cant exactly sit down with the family or group of friends and stick sodom or a serbian film on.
