Another gimmick from Brown or the renewal of a British identity?

All school leavers could be asked to swear an oath to the Queen
School-leavers are to be encouraged to swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen under new government proposals being unveiled on British citizenship.
Pupils would give a commitment to Queen and country in ceremonies akin to those for new immigrants.

Former attorney general Lord Goldsmith, who conducted the citizenship review, said the aim was more social cohesion.

Teaching unions said the plan was un-British, and the Scottish Government has also dismissed the idea.

"Could be asked..." Not "Will be asked..." The devil is in the details.
"Will be asked" as in if the plans go ahead is what was meant.

Anyway how about swearing to hold up Truth, Democracy, Freedom and Moral values. Surly that makes far more sense?.....Of course the only problem is it would stop any school leavers then going on to become politicians. :(

I'd rather the oath be taken purely for the state, I'm not comfortable to swearing allegance to a single person as they are in no way better than me, to do so in my opinion would infer that they are more important than I am.

I agree, however something that this country had in the past was a pecking order that was respected. People used to know their place and respect those in positions of power and saw them as being above themselves.

Unfortunately today we have lost trust and our change to a position of equality has not also bread social responsibility and respect.

Respect for your country, it's values, your community those around you and all importantly yourself! is what is needed. Rather than a woman 99.9% of the population will never meet.

Are you completely stupid? Money that is made through tourism and exports is money we don't have to raise via taxes. We benefit from our country's wealth a great deal.

This may be true but should we be encouraging School Children to swear an oath to the Queen on the grounds she keeps our taxes down?

I would far rather they swore to hold up Democracy and British values.

No we shouldn't. The only reason I brought money in to it was due to Baz's post, saying that the Queen is an inbred who "sponges off this country".

I agree that it would be ridiculous to support it solely based on income the royal family generate through tourism.

I was forcing the point to be honest, but what I was getting at was that for those that don't have a problem with it, how do you actually justify this oath and what duty does this oath mean the individual has agreed to uphoald?

In the case of the Armed Forces, they swear an oath to Queen and Country in form of protection from outside forces, but for the individual what on earth would it mean?
