School Leavers to swear oath to Queen!

I agree, however something that this country had in the past was a pecking order that was respected. People used to know their place and respect those in positions of power and saw them as being above themselves.

Unfortunately today we have lost trust and our change to a position of equality has not also bread social responsibility and respect.

Respect for your country, it's values, your community those around you and all importantly yourself! is what is needed. Rather than a woman 99.9% of the population will never meet.

Exactly, the oath for 99%-100% will proably be an empty jesture, reinforcing values of common decceny and community spirit is what is needed.

This is a particularly difficult thing to do in my opinion as pratically every aspect of our lives will need looking at in depth and to some I don't think they will like what they see. It will include the way act and think towards each other things like manners, our reaction to immigrants and the way they intergrate, the way the media influence our lives and the respsoniblity they should have when reporting the news. to name a few.

Reminds me of the time I attended a fire in an Orange Lodge. It had only been a small fire in the kitchen and the lodge members had already put it out but we had been asked to attend to make sure everything was safe. In the middle of pulling out timber to check behind pipe chases I was asked to stand for the national anthem and the conversation went a bit like this -

"Stand for the national anthem"
"I'm a bit busy so you do what you like and I'll sort this"
"STAND for the NATIONAL ANTHEM'
"As I already said, I'm a bit busy ensuring this fire is actually out'
"STAND FOR THE NATIONAL ANTHEM"
"Okay then, do you have a song sheet for Scotland The Brave as I'm not too sure about all the lyrics"
"OUT"
"Cheerio then'

I was within my rights to stay but the Orange Order lads where starting to get rather upset and I didn't want it to flare up. The Police where called for and the inspection went ahead with the occupants of the lodge glaring at me and more than a few times there where some choice adjectives being thrown my way. Still, I've got the skin of a rhino and that little meeting always makes me smile.

Vive la República de Escocia.

Sounds like a good thing to me, although the Scots, Welsh, Irish and haters of Her Majesty won't particularly like it. But I don't see it doing any harm at all. I think it would perhaps also be an Idea to teach pupils the rich history and great value the Monarchy bring to the country to perhaps stem the tide of "OMG LOL NO WAI SHES A SPONGING LOSER LOL". Before they take the oath.

I'm glad that I've already left school so it isn't going to apply but I really can't imagine I'd want to swear an oath to the Queen and I'm pretty sure my 17 year old self would have thought the same. I have nothing particular against the monarchy, it is simply an irrelevance in my life for the most part so I have no burning desire to swear allegience to it or any member of it.

//edit and Capn' $qu!ff, no to Jerusalem if it is meant as an anthem for the whole of the UK, it may sound more uplifting but it is specific to England really. If you want it as the English national anthem then no problem but not for the whole of the UK.
