Man of Honour
when are 'official' statements ever entirly truthful?
When you stop being a child and realise the whole world's purpose isn't to lie to you.

Reminds me of the time I attended a fire in an Orange Lodge. It had only been a small fire in the kitchen and the lodge members had already put it out but we had been asked to attend to make sure everything was safe. In the middle of pulling out timber to check behind pipe chases I was asked to stand for the national anthem and the conversation went a bit like this -
"Stand for the national anthem"
"I'm a bit busy so you do what you like and I'll sort this"
"STAND for the NATIONAL ANTHEM'
"As I already said, I'm a bit busy ensuring this fire is actually out'
"STAND FOR THE NATIONAL ANTHEM"
"Okay then, do you have a song sheet for Scotland The Brave as I'm not too sure about all the lyrics"
"OUT"
"Cheerio then'
I was within my rights to stay but the Orange Order lads where starting to get rather upset and I didn't want it to flare up. The Police where called for and the inspection went ahead with the occupants of the lodge glaring at me and more than a few times there where some choice adjectives being thrown my way. Still, I've got the skin of a rhino and that little meeting always makes me smile.
Vive la República de Escocia.
I don't, that money goes towards Prince Philip and where else do you get so much entertainment for less than a fiver? Even going to the cinema now costs me about £7 and that is for 90-120 minutes of a film, with gaffes by Prince Philip I'm saving over £2 a year and he can be almost guaranteed to spread the amusement throughout the year.

So does income tax.
Which the royals also pay.
My father would be absolutely raging at this. My family's come over from Ireland and I grew up here. If I was made to do this oath, it would be a slap in the face to my family and I would refuse. What would they do? Kick me out in a fit of authoritarian rage and be ridiculed by the rest of the civilised world? Don't make me laugh. To the Irish in the UK this is rather disgusting (and to a lot of others I'd imagine). Brown, you're a freaking idiot. Just let the others take your spot already. How you've managed to come from being the far more attractive alternative to Blair with tons more integrity to being the most unliked leader since WW2 is insane. Stop with these crackpot schemes already. You want to do something about this percieved 'identity crisis' when there are none, kick the illegal immigrants out and impose limits on future occurences.
only in recet years
I don't know, he hasn't done anything good recently. I have a Prince Philip licence but I never really listen to him anymore.

Going on past history it is when he goes quiet for a while that he is really saving himself up for something monumentally crass - I've got high hopes for him if he takes the stand in the Diana enquiry as a rebuttal to Mr Al-Fayed and his "the World is scheming against me, them and the lizard people" or whatever he is ranting about this week.
True, but at least they pay it. I just don't think it's right to call them "spongers" when they're employing other people and paying income tax at the same time. That's not my definition of a sponger.
Here's some interesting figures from Prince Charles' estate in 2006:
Clarence House's annual review shows Prince Charles paid nearly £3.3m in tax last year - the first time such a figure has been revealed.
Accounts also show his private income rose by 6% to more than £14m in 2005-06 on the back of commercial property rent reviews and higher investment returns.
Charles and Camilla were described as a "powerful force" for British interests. Along with his sons, they were said to cost every man, woman and child in the UK 3.5p, half a pence down on 2004-05.

So the bulk of his expenditure is official (ie. staff salaries, etc.) and he's paying tax at a rate of just over 40.6% - which seems fair enough to me.
