Well I'm sure most people who aren't stupid or financially reckless could live off the money we give the royals, by employing savvy financial advisers and investing wisely. I wouldn't say that's really earning it though, just as a lottery winner who invests wisely isn't really working to earn it. I'd class that as sponging.
Also, Charles isn't a "powerful force". He's outspoken and often embarrassing, much like his father.

the £14m private income is from his own business, and from the looks of that he contributes £1.3m to the country.

The royals receive a pittance from the public purse, comparable to the expenses paid to politicians. Moreover, the Queen and Phil the Greek are the only ones who receive money from the Civil List (Phil gets about £359,000 per year; hardly a king's ransom!) Some members of the royal family receive Parliamentary Annuity (to cover official expenses, including staff salaries) but this is always repaid by the Queen, from her private income.

The vast proportion of the royals' income (I would say more than 95%) is derived from rent and produce sales in the Duchys of Lancaster and Cornwall. Put simply, they are commercial landowners (though Charles is also a businessman) and like every commercial landowner, they receive income from their property.

Yep, that's true. And they'll be there for as long as the citizens of the UK can't be bothered to change the system.

If they are that succesful in business and rent they should recieve no public funds, they have that living afforded to them.. a very long time ago. They should now, imo, become self sustaining.
