School pupils stage mass walkout after teachers reprimand girls... for linking arms

Kids have always wanted to be treated like adults. The only difference is that now we have a more clouded view of rights and discipline because people are too scared to punish their children when they misbehave.

Yes, that is the only difference now, I am sure its got nothing to do with the documented increase in sexuality and maturity levels of children.....

Staged several walk outs and sit in's at my old school and college :)

Not over something as petty as this, one led to the Drama students getting their exams remarked and they all scored much higher. (The head was refusing to pay the money)

Rights? What rights? This is the kind of rubbish that the internet fills childrens' minds with - that they have 'rights' to pick and choose their disciplines at school.

We wouldn't even dream of being seen linking arms with a girl at school, let alone kissing. You'd be lucky if you didn't get suspended for that. The fact that the children were even allowed to get through the door during their walkout shows that the discipline was lax anyway. The school shouldn't have even let the thought enter their heads.

So because you had no rights, kids today shouldn't?

I agree that kids shouldn't have the same level of rights as an adult, they are kids after all and while in school the teachers are incharge.

But holding hands and lnking arms is hardly a problem imho and doesn't affect education standards in any way.

I don't see how anyone can stop them "getting through the door". Are you suggesting use of force by the teachers to restrain 100s of kids? really?

Yeah which is why the didn't say they couldn't do it.

Kids acted on an embellished rumour.

The teachers even said i nan assembly it was all a rumour before the protest took place and there was no "no contact" rule in place.

Fear of being disrespectful, due to punishment. Which is fair enough

Which leads to people being scared of authority their entire life and somehow thinking that they're inferior to others. It is every man, woman and child's duty to question authority, question what it's doing, why it's doing it and why it's there in the first place. Let authority run free and you get a dysatopia.

Is anyone familiar with the deschooling movement?

In that case it is even more silly but still they are children and we know they are silly, if they want to all walk out at the same time what as a teacher would you do?

Lock them inside? start randomly grabbing kids and locking them in rooms? start tying them up?

It's easy to act tough but when you have a stampede of kids exiting the building you aint doing nothing.

I'm not saying the teachers should have stopped them.

On the contrary I'd have preferred they just said if you're not back inside in 10 minutes you're all expelled.

Then when their parents have explained to them the consequences of that let them come back to appeal and explain how they were wrong or find a new school.

That there was a no touching rule.

There wasn't.

There was, It came from a gay couple kissing in the school (which is a roman catholic school) and then that rule came in, it then got exercised on two girls linking arms.

That Headteacher is slimy. Ever since he's been there the school has gone down hill. In the article it refers to the last Ofsted inspection (2006) which was when Mr Whelan (the old head) was in charge, he ran that place amazingly and was a nice guy. So much so that past students add him on facebook now. This headteacher, nobody likes. And yes teachers are not meant to be your friends but you can still be nice.

And as for all the people who say "Back in my day...." well guess what, it's not your day anymore, so stop comparing it to what you used to have. Things change.

ok expel the entire school and then enjoy the rest of your short headteacher carreer.

150 isn't even close to the whole school.

And as i said you could accept them back if they learn their lesson and hopefully not act so retarded in future.

I believe taking someone out of school and then bringing them back when they have learnt their lesson is a suspension, so you're going round in circles here.

And there were roughly 180 to a year group. (was 180 in my year). So it's almost a fifth of all pupils 150.

What? They should be praised for standing up for themselves, not treated as though they're idiots.

Many people (not looking at anyone in particular ;) ) can spot flaws in the world, and serious problems that they simply don't agree with. Many of those can even come up with an alternative solution. But very few people actually have the balls to do something about it, and no matter what, why or how it was done they should be cheered on for trying, and realizing their potential. Crush that spirit in them now and you crush their humanity.

So how about you stop complaining about it on an internet forum, and consider what it truly means to be human. It's our actions that define us, and being a human being is more than simply being born. It's a state of mind.
