Scottish Gas to fine late payers

What he said :)

Majority of people will be on D/debit so nothing to worry about for those customers.
wait for the day where they take out all your money using a DD and having to fight to get it back.

Which, of course, doesn't happen because of the DD guarantee... Unless of course you did actually owe them all your money.

If they do take money they're not supposed to, speak to your bank first, they should reimburse you and then claim the money back from the company. However, that only really works on the most recent payment, so they'll still have a chance to mess you about. But a one-off ****-up can usually be fixed relatively simply via your bank.

As for the OP's topic......it's been on the cards for a while. Can only hope that it means more people will leave them for any number of better deals elsewhere.

Going on his usual moral standard when it comes to money (ie he appears to have none), I highly doubt it. Then he'll should about the evilness of company X for expecting him to pay for the services he's used...

It has happened, and took ages to get back, what about the bank of scotland with their DD a few months ago leaving peoples accounts empty , yes it does happen, and no i didnt owe them money.

I've heard it happen too.

I had an account that was closed by their HQ with my money it for no reason. Was fuming, opened a new account with balance plus I got a card with £50 in it. Made it not as bad, but still.

The DD guarantee is useless.

My brother had problems with his council deciding he had a woman living with him (he should be so lucky) and increased his council tax DD.

He told his bank it was wrong but they said as it was the amount the council requested the DD was correct and not covered by the guarantee.

Totaly useless - you give companies access to your bank account under the impression that they can't take what you don't agree to but it's all a lie.

Then the bank was wrong and not going by the terms of the guarantee.

Banks also operate a Direct Debit guarantee. In this, if a customer disputes an amount that has come out of their account by direct debit, they can contact their bank; this money will then be returned within 24 hours. It is then the billing company's responsibility to ask the customer for the money. However, the billing company is not automatically liable under the guarantee for any bank charges caused by the billing company's error, for example if an incorrect direct debit transaction causes the customer to go overdrawn.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_debit#United_Kingdom

Under the rules of the Direct Debit scheme, if there is any dispute or error in the Direct Debit claim, the subscriber can demand an immediate refund through their bank. The bank will reimburse the subscriber’s account and claim the money back off of the Originator. The originator will then contact the subscriber to settle the dispute. The guarantee only applies in the UK.

The fact that some banks don't do it correctly doesn't mean DD's are a bad idea.

Having said that, I won't allow some companies anywhere near my bank account, my local council being one of them.

Doesn't seem so bad - £5 if your over 28 days later paying, as I understand it british gas are reasonably helpful if your having trouble paying anyway.

Compared with bank charges this is pretty fair.
Thats not the issue, if a company as big as BG are allowed to dictate their fines then the consumer should also be allowed to dictate their fines when BG dont turn up. Not only this but the post does take time and sometimes the bills never appear, this is just a cheap way to get extra funds.

Or alternatively a way of making irresponsible people pay what they should be doing when they should be doing it... Unless you think collections department activity is somehow free?

Well it seems some people dont care about the charge, this leads an established charge which in itself leads to other charges.

A collection department is part of the company structure and not a entity of its own, according to your way of thinking a gas bill it would say xxx for gas and xx for collections.
