Scrappage scheme cars: Still on the runway!

why do you need wiki to know that the reason we had the scrappage scheme was because we had tons of stock lieing round unsold because nobody was buying a new car in a middle of a recession ?

one of the key counter arguments was that these cars had already been manufacturerd and were sitting around unsold because of the recession.

So offering the incentive didnt increase car production and co2 output because the cars were already made to meet a demand that wasn't there.

I never heard that counter argument. Many cars were manufactured from scratch to meet scrappage demand. There were MONTHS of lead times on stuff like Polos etc.

Except they're not allowed to, because of the legislation under which the scheme was set up.
I can't say that I remember any specific suggestion that the cars couldn't be cannibalised for spare parts

As I recall, the key stipulation on disposal was that they had to be disabled in such a way as to ensure that they could never be put back on the road. I believe that this was to be achieved by draining the engine oil and running the engines until they seized - which does seem a bit of a waste. As someone has suggested above, the structural integrity of the bodywork could be impaired in such a way as to ensure that they were undrivable.

Since a significant point of the whole scheme was to benefit the motor trade, I guess that the SMMT would object to a spare parts bonanza although I suspect that a few canny dealers might have substituted some parts ;)

How do we know these are ACTUALLY scrappage scheme cars?

Given that companies obviously pay money to store their own unsold new cars there (ie Merc and Peugeot, or at least dealers selling these brands) it's not a massive leap of faith that the used cars are just standard part ex cars that the dealers couldn't get rid of at the time, for whatever reason and wanted off their forecourts.

The picture of the Austin made me :(. It's such a shame that cars like this are being left there to rot.
