Seagate 500GB 7200.11 ETA: 2Days:)! ST3500320AS

500GB drives are going up massively in price as the vendors are running out of stock and fast. Seagate will not support the drive as it is brand new plus I doubt you will see a 500GB drive for <£50 for a while.

i think you mis-read my question, i didnt ask anything about supporting the drive.

what i was asking if there was a review of it or the 1TB version.

i understand the price hike due to it being a brand new drive likely with 2 * 250gb platters and will prob be similar speed to the 750gb WD.

if the new Seagate 500GB 7200.11 is only going to be used for storage is there any point in spending £25 more on it ?

not particularly, but if you are going to install windows on it then definately. plus drives normally drop in price a lot after the first 3 weeks, like with the gigabyte x38, that has dropped over £12 in places and only been out for 1 week. so i'd expect a £15 premium soon instead of £25.

When I talk about supporting the drive I mean the price.:)

Good luck. Hard drive prices are ALL going up. Trying to buy 250, 320, 400 and 500 is getting harder and harder and it's not about to get any easier. Always happens this time of year and either the other e-tailers will increase their drive prices or will be daft enough to absorb the cost (most of them won't).

This stuff bugs the carp out of me, is their a real shortage (if so I want to see a statement from the manufacturers) or is this just retailors pimping up the price.

Throttling a market to create demand and raise prices boils my ****.

It's probably the big PC manufacturers starting to ramp up production ahead of Christmas, this means the smaller e-tailers can struggle to source parts.

not sure the 32mb will be worth it when its more than the cost of two 250gb versions. my 2 new 250's that are basically the 7200.11's are getting 185mb/s max in raid, average 150mb/, and one very low part on the graph, which is weird, is like 90mb/s minimum. they are sweet.

I cant see the 32mb cache being that much use - moving from 8mb to 16mb has made no difference at all ( yes Windows works a little faster but thats just down to the fresh install more than anything else)

I personally think the price is pretty reasonable for a brand new drive especially with the stock rush before Xmas making it difficult to locate items

I wonder what the chances of these drives being as fast as the 150GB Raptor in terms of game speed loading? if they aren't then I wont even consider buying them - no point.

I'm surprised their hasnt been any reviews. . . .
