anybody got any guides please on how to do this

building a site and want to learn how to get it on the first page of results from google

What you're looking for is "SEO"

Have a look at sites such as SEObook, not a bad starting point.
Just stay away from people offering to do it on your site for a one off fee (if you are planning to get your site in the top ranks!), SEO is an ongoing thing not a one off job!

And when you have sussed it you can tell me how to do it - tried a few things and still no where near page 1000 let alone page 1 !!
